Paris Olympics 2024 News: ISA World Surfing Games Secure Women’s Quotas Amid Escalating Competition

Over the past week, the finest athletes of the surfing industry have been riding the waves on Arecibo beach all in hopes of making it to the ultimate stage: Paris Olympics 2024. After days of battle and fight for a ticket to attaining dreams, day 6 was for 4 women to conquer. With some veterans on the list and some freshers on the grounds, it was nonetheless a celebration of ambitions in Puerto Rico.

The 2024 ISA World Surfing Games made its arrival on the 23rd of Feb with the Paris Olympics 2024 quotas prepped for the triumphant ones. Day 6 found its first four in women’s and here’s the list.

Paris Olympics 2024 welcomes new names

On the 29th of Feb, Yolanda Sequeira, Sol Aguirre, Taina Hinckel, and Nadia Erostarbe grabbed four of the eight women’s quotas available for the Paris Olympics 2024. In the process, the champions denied a second qualification opportunity for five Tokyo 2020 surfers. While some dreams were shattered, others witnessed a continuation and a first-time glory for the nation.

“It is a dream. In 2020, it came to nothing, so this year I am even more excited,” Spain’s Nadia Erostarbe told Olympics.com. Erostarbe’s triumph marked Spain’s first-ever surfing qualification at the Olympics. The surfer had to shut down Olympians Tatiana Weston-Webb, Teresa Bonvalot, and Leilani McGonagle in riding to her victory.

Alongside Nadia, Brazil’s Taina Hinckel and Peru’s Sol Aguirre became the next two surfers to claim their first-ever Olympic qualification. However, while the three stars celebrated their firsts, veteran Yolanda Sequeira stood to cherish her second.

“I feel like I belong in that top tier of surfing and I just want to get there,” Sequeira told Olympics.com. Sequeira bested world No.1 Molly Picklum followed by three-time champion Sally Fitzgibbons to secure her ticket to Paris.

While day 6 may have presented the ambitions ticked off for four, they aren’t all on offer. With two more days left on the calendar, a battle for the Paris Olympics 2024 continues for the best of surfing names.

Following women’s eight individual quotas for the Paris Olympics 2024, the persisting event offers five more in the men’s category. One of the hopefuls on the list is known to be Chile’s Manuel Selman. The 2020 Olympian has faced his share of setbacks at the 2024 World Surfing Games. However, the defeats haven’t thrown the champion off his game just yet.

“I feel really comfortable surfing these waves,” he tells Olympics.com. If Selman were to place in the two 2 on day 7, the quota would be all his. Next on the list is Gabriel Medina who misses an Olympic medal among his three world titles. After reigning dominance past days, the surfer looks hopeful for the showdown ahead. 2 more days to go and 9 more names await to tick off their Paris Olympics 2024 hopes.
