It is rare to see small kids have the conscience and integrity to do something as serious and adult-like as committing to charity. While adults might consider it their moral responsibility to look out for their fellow people, children don’t have that burden to fulfill. Perhaps, that is why it is even more inspiring to witness young children helping others out.

Kids do it not because they feel they are obligated, but simply because they think it’s a nice thing to do. One such motivated and galvanized individual is the eleven-year-old Carter Doorley of Brigantine. Doorley has been surfing consecutively for more than 1000 days now, and his reasons are simple yet influential.

According to his Instagram account, he has surfed daily for 1,079 days now. As he himself describes it, “My inner voice tells me to surf, so I surf.” Dawn Doorley says that “every day he goes out there, we’re still amazed.” Till now, junior Doorley has scooted past the 1,000-day mark and now has his sights set on 1,095 days, which will equal three years. He is expected to reach that goal by May 24. His dream began taking a foothold during the COVID-19 lockdown in 2020 when playgrounds were shut and people were isolated in their homes.

The 11-year-old’s father is the one who taught him to surf. Carter then decided that he was going to swim for 100 straight days before the school re-opened. He completed the 100 days soon enough, but he decided to keep going. “I’ve gotten so much better,” Carter says about his skills since beginning the surf mission.  Soon, his surfing expedition evolved and transformed into something else, something inspiring and tremendous.

Charity begins in the sea

For many, it might begin at home. But for Carter Doorley, charity began while surfing in the vast ocean. First, Doorley started cleaning up the beaches and restoring them to their original pristine condition. Doing this ignited a passion in him, a passion to provide aid wherever he could. The little kid started donating to organizations such as SurfAid, the Humane Society of Atlantic County and the Save the Children Fund, among others. The kid raised $1,500 for SurfAid, $150 for Heart of Surfing, an organization that offers free surfing lessons to autistic children, and $150 for the Humane Society of Atlantic County.

Carter has also been able to connect with some behemoths of the surfing industry, such as Ventnor’s Ben Gravy, Will Skudin, Ian Crane, and Kai Lenny. He seems to be an unstoppable force of nature, with his dreams only getting bigger by the day. Doorley hopes to one day go surfing in the waters of Hawaii, California, Indonesia, and Nicaragua.
