In the world of surfing, California’s absence from the winner’s circle has persisted for over three decades. Not since Tom Curren’s triumph in 1990 has a Californian surfer claimed a World Title. This enduring dry spell has seen the rise and fall of champions from distant shores. Meanwhile, the Golden State has longed for its surfing hero. This drought stretches longer than the careers of most of the current living surfing stars, making it a stark anomaly in the sport’s history.

Amidst this dry spell, a new contender has emerged, ready to challenge the status quo and make waves in the surfing community. Griffin Colapinto, a 25-year-old native of San Clemente, is poised at number two, on the cusp of a historic battle against the reigning champion, Filipe Toledo. However, this raises one burning question among surfing enthusiasts: Can Griffin Colapinto shatter the California curse and clinch the elusive World Title?

California, with its iconic surf culture and abundant coastlines, has grappled with an unusual curse: the inability to produce a World Title-winning surfer. While it has remained a hub of innovation and progression in the surfing world, its surfers have consistently fallen short at the ultimate stage. Meanwhile, nations like Australia, Brazil, and Hawaii have enjoyed periods of dominance.

Griffin’s Dream and Steady Trajectory in Surfing World!

The upcoming champion says,  “I’ve had this dream since I was a kid. This way my original goal that I’ve had since I first started surfing. I’ve always wanted to be the best surfer and win a world title.” It’s a dream he’s nurtured over the years, a dream that has guided his surfing career with unwavering dedication and discipline towards his goal. The American surfer first captured the world’s attention back in 2016 when he made waves with a remarkable last-minute air reverse—a move that helped him secure victory in a highly competitive Qualifying Series heat at the Hawaii Pro.

What sets Griffin apart is the steady trajectory of his journey. Unlike sudden spikes in performance, his progress has been characterized by a consistent climb up the ranks. This, he believes, is the key to his current position at number two and his potential to secure a World Title, whether it happens now or in the near future. He adds, “I feel like I’ll get a title at some point in my life, whether it’s now or in five years”.
