The smooth surface of the waves hides the turbulent stories of surfing. A group of surfers are now sharing the story of their life-altering experience in the open sea for the first time. Elliot Foote brought his partner Steph Weisse and his friends Jordan Short and Will Teagle for a once-in-a-lifetime surfing adventure in Indonesia. The party went out to the open sea by boat, but it capsized in a massive storm. The four Australians and two other Indonesian nationals were rescued after 37 hours of being stranded in the sea.

The rescuers found the group on Tuesday, “bobbing on surfboards” in Indonesia’s remote Aceh province. In a video that has now gone viral, the group of castaways were cheering in joy as the rescuers drew close to them. Later, Foote revealed specific details from their harrowing experience mentioning how the group supported each other.

Elliot Foote was rescued later as he had gone looking for help while his companions stayed on the surfboards. The surfing enthusiast spoke to the media, expressing his gratitude to his partner and two friends who motivated him throughout the ordeal. Foote said that at one point, he had become quite anxious about their chances of survival but “couldn’t be happier to have these three with me. They’re all so strong, and every single moment they just knew what to do”. He explained that the group was resolved to stay together as a unit no matter what challenges they faced.

Elliot Foote credited the hard work of the rescue team from both the Australian and Indonesian governments for their safety. In an interview with 1News, Foote said, “We just want to recover, it’s been a crazy 37 hours”. He is extremely glad to be on dry land now and feels lucky that all in his party are alive and safe. Despite his relief, Foote could not help but feel sorry for the one Indonesian native who is still missing. This tragic incident has united the surfing community of the two countries in support of the missing crew member.

Australia’s Foreign Minister Penny Wong also mentioned that the country’s thoughts will be with the family of the missing Indonesian crew member. In the meantime, the search for the missing Indonesian crew member is still ongoing. Yunardi Ardi, the boat’s captain, said the Australians began paddling away on the surfing boards after falling into the sea. But he and his crew members stayed back when a big wave came and carried one of them towards Singkil. Now the search is directed toward that location for the man.
