The turquoise water has a ripple for everyone. With its big waves and giant barrels, the ocean welcomes everyone with open arms. Likewise, recently, a dog surfer also graced the surfing realm and took all the brownie points through his staunch performance. More so, he not only paddled through the water but also became an epitome of inspiration for many.
The eighteenth edition of the annual Surf Dog Surf-A-Thon will begin next month at Del Mar Beach. Interestingly, each year the event is organized by the Helen Woodward Animal Center. Now, to practice for this year’s event, dog owners gathered at the beach with their furry companions for getting their dogs acquainted with the ripples. Among them is a unique dog who, despite having a disability, has shown courage to overcome it. The three-legged dog Clancy is seen practicing for the surfing event beside others.

In a video clip shot at the Del Mar beach, the three-legged Clancy can be seen walking at the beach for surfing along with its owners and other beachgoers. The dog was surfing with proper balance and perfect standing on the surfboard. The four-year-old beagle and lab mix has learned to surf in classes hosted by the Helen Woodward Animal Center at Del Mar Beach. Clancy will be one of the debutants in this year’s wave-riding contest.
Though Clancy was born with four limbs, one of her rare legs has to be amputated following an accident. He was rescued and placed in a shelter where he got medical treatment. More so, during her treatment, he got tested positive for heartworms. Hence, he was transferred to Helen Woodward where he was placed in the care of his present owner Matt Fisette and his partner Kristine Fisette for two years as a foster.
The couple adopted Clancy after his medical hold was lifted. Speaking on his participation in the coming surfing event Matt said, “He acts just like a four-legged dog“. He decided “Let’s just throw him on a board ” and watch the result about two weeks ago. It turns out to be perfect, and he looks natural to it. Talking about his disability, Matt’s partner Kristine said, “Even though he is missing a leg, he has the ability to do anything a dog can do“. She feels proud when people watch him surfing. The surfing competition for dogs will be held next month by Helen Woodward Animal Center after introducing it with its annual events to create awareness.

So, in 2013 the center started classes in partnership with SoCal Surf Dogs to teach Surf-A-Thon competitors learn how to surf the waves. The instructors start new “surFURs” with safety training that includes floating devices and other protective equipment. They first teach them how to stand on board, then take them to shallow waters to practice balancing and float before riding. The dogs take rides on waves with assistance from dog surfing professionals.
The three-legged dog surfing video depicts his courage and strong will to overcome his disability. The Helen Woodward Animal Center is doing an amazing job with its surfing classes, thus creating a long bond between them and the owners, don’t you agree?
