Is the Paris Olympics losing its edge by potentially canceling surfing? What’s your take?

As the fourth day of the Paris Olympics 2024 comes to an end, it has been a triumph in many sports, offering inspiring moments throughout. However, in surfing, the elite athletes’ performances have been halted. Officials were compelled to cancel the surfing competition scheduled for the day in Tahiti due to adverse weather conditions. “No competition on Tuesday July 30 in Tahiti due to poor weather conditions: 4m+ wave and very strong onshore wind.” As stated by the French Surfing Federation, there is no doubt that the Paris Olympics 2024 has been capturing global attention.

While the first-round heats wrapped up, the defending champion, Carissa Moore and her squad members have already won their personal triumphs in women’s heats. After their wins in their heats, they all are now closer to the Olympic gold. When it comes to the men’s heats, John John Florence has been on the tough front leading his own set. Due to the extreme conditions, Griffin Colapinto had to wrap up his Olympic campaign for the year. While the others look forward for the game to be continued.

To accommodate unforeseen issues, the Olympics have scheduled reserve periods. For the Paris Olympics 2024, the reserve days are extended until August 5th. With surfing now postponed, the competitions can be rescheduled to days following August 1.

This is not the first event to be postponed at the Paris Olympics. The men’s triathlon was also delayed due to water quality issues in the River Seine, which tests have shown to still be unsafe for athletes.

Men’s triathlon postponed due to River Seine water quality

The men’s triathlon event which was set to begin on Tuesday morning, was postponed after the water quality tests in the River Seine revealed that conditions were still unsafe for the athletes. The sports governing body stated- “Both triathlons are subject to the forthcoming water tests complying with the established World Triathlon thresholds for swimming.” “Paris 2024 and World Triathlon reiterate that their priority is the health of the athletes. The tests carried out in the Seine today revealed water quality levels that did not provide sufficient guarantees to allow the event to be held.”

The triathlon is now scheduled for Wednesday, July 31st. However, if conditions do not improve, it may be rescheduled to Friday, August 2nd. As of Tuesday morning, the hoped-for sunny weather and warmer temperatures had not yet reduced bacteria levels in the Seine enough to safely hold the swim segment of the race.

If the bacteria levels remain high, the triathlon will be converted into a duathlon, which includes only the biking and running segments, according to the authorities. Historically, swimming in the River Seine has been banned for over a century. However, in preparation for the Paris Olympics, organizers and authorities invested 1.4 billion euros ($1.5 billion) to make the river suitable for the event.
