Scientists have estimated that sharks first came into existence in the ocean around 400 million years ago. That is 200 million years before dinosaurs manifested on the earth. And humans? The homo sapien species is relatively new to the earth, coming into existence merely 4-5 million years ago. Sharks have called the ocean their home since times immemorial. Hence, all sea-centric activity by humans, including surfing, swimming, fishing, or boating, is voyaging into the habitat of these majestic creatures.

While surfing, shark encounters have become more prevalent with the boom in the human population and with the creatures venturing nearer to the shores for food sources. Earlier this month, a foil surfer encountered a Tiger Shark while surfing in Oahu. Recently, a similar incident took place when a surfer came face-to-face with a Great White Shark while duck diving in the ocean. The experience was terrifying, a sentiment that was readily expressed by the viewers of the surfaced clip.

In a video posted by the Tik Tok account ‘@surftok02’, a surfer was seen out on the ocean riding his surfboard. The video had an impending sense of doom due to the background music used by the creator, the song being ‘Hvitserk’s choice – Trevor Morris’. The caption to the video reads, “We can all agree that this has happen to every surfer before”. The viewers were soon able to see why the video spelled catastrophe. As a wave swelled toward the surfer, he duck-dived under the water and there it was- a Great White Shark mere feet away from him.

The video capturing the hair-raising incident has gone viral and has over 3 million views. Had the surfer not ducked under the water while surfing, the unsuspecting human would not have seen the predator of the ocean inching toward him. Usually, sharks are silent residents of the vast ocean, simply relaxing in their homes and swimming around without getting spotted. However, as humans progress deeper and deeper into the ocean, encounters with sharks keep increasing. Although, most of the time, these encounters are not tragic, fatal, or result in injury.

A similar situation was faced by a foil surfer off the coast of Oahu, Hawaii. While on a foil surfing expedition in the waters of Honolulu, a surfer called Nick Capule went right past a Tiger Shark which was about 15-20 feet long. While most species of sharks are docile and usually don’t bother humans, one needs to be cautious around Tiger Sharks and Great White Sharks. They are some of the apex predators of the ocean, and if they do engage, it is difficult to escape with one’s life. This is the reason why the comments section of Tik Tok was full of terrified individuals.

Viewers express their concern at the horrific surfing encounter

After watching the big shark so close to the man who went surfing, a viewer was rightly upset with the situation and said, “The way I would simply just pass away”. Another commentator gave a dangerous solution to the issue, and said, “I don’t open my eyes when I duck dive, if you don’t see it ain’t there”. One of the followers made a hilarious quip and pretended to talk to the shark. This is what they had to say, “Aloha Mr shark. I hope you already had lunch. Mahalo for letting me enter your home.”

While others were terrified, this particular follower was not. They commented, “Pet him. He just wants pets”. Someone laid out the biggest fear of everyone and said, “with my luck I’d get eaten whole by a shark in 2 feet of water.” A follower made a heartfelt wish, and said, “I hope this won’t put you off surfing”. While this surfer was lucky enough to escape, that is not true for all adventure-seekers. At the end of the day, the ocean is the shark’s home, and that is a risk humans take while going into it.
