Kelly Slater is one of the greatest surfers in the world. The 50-year-old continues to take part in competitions with no plans of retiring anytime soon. He has won the World Surf League a glorious 11 times. Slater has participated in the Olympics several times, but he believes he still has a long way to go. 

No matter whatever competition he has participated in, Slater has dominated in all of them. He won the Triple Crown of Surfing Champion three times in 1995, 1998, and 2019. Moreover, his name has also been inducted into the Surfers’ Hall of Fame. 

When does Kelly Slater plan to retire from surfing? 

Kelly Slater is going strong at an age when most surfers retire. The 50-year-old has always shown his passion for surfing above everything else. In June 2022, he was seen surfing at the Indonesian reefs despite his injury. As Slater has won several titles and recognitions, his fans speculate about his retirement frequently. However, only on rare occasions, the great surfer has commented on it. 

In one of the official Olympic videos, Slater vaguely talked about his retirement. Even though Slater was a pro in surfing, he got a shot at the Olympics after 30 years. Having started as an Olympian after 30 years, Slater had several targets to achieve. He stated: 

“I want to surf until I’m 70!”

Kelly Slater then shared a few anecdotes from his life before becoming a famous surfer. The surfer did not belong to an affluent family. He saw his parents bearing financial struggles. It was his mom who supported the house for some time. However, after a while, they had to sell their house.

Moreover, when Kelly took his baby steps in the surfing field, he was highly motivated by his brother to give his best. Also, in his formative years, he was looked down upon by many surfers because he belonged to the east coast. 

What will Slater do after he retires?

Apart from being the greatest surfer of all time, Slater also contributes to the environment. He is an environmentalist owning a brand name, Outerknown. It produces sustainable clothes that are environment-friendly.
