One of surfing’s most prestigious championships, Rip Curl Pro Bells Beach, saw a highly unexpected win this year. 20-year-old Jan Juc local Xavier Huxtable turned heads for dominating the Sunday event, leaving behind world no. 1 Jack Robinson and the legend Kelly Slater. Needlessly to say, the young lad’s coach is proud of his win. He recently revealed certain unknown details about the star surfer.

After the glorious win, coach, Cahill Bell-Warren, appeared in a podcast interview with ABC Melbourne, talking about how Huxtable is as a person and what he thinks about appearing in championships.

During the interview, host Ali Moore curiously asked coach Bell-Warren to reveal how Huxtable is in reality. To this, he stated, “I have known him for so long,” looking back to the time he began training the 20-year-old. He added, “He’s just one of those good kind-hearted people. His heart rate never seems to go up in pressure situations.” Bell-Warren also added that Huxtable is a one-of-a-kind surfer who is very calm during championships. He will win a championship one day, and the next day he is back to practicing. He never lets his wins get over his mind.

For the unversed, Huxtable was a wild card entrant at the recent championship. Competing against some of the greatest surfers in the world, the 20-year-old kept his cool. He was skillfully able to give tough competition to Jack Robinson and 11-time world champion Kelly Slater in the opening round. Robinson tried to reach a 13.43, but he fell off on the first turn in the last 10 seconds.

After winning at the Bells, Huxtable was over the moon. He told The Sidney Morning Herald that he came to the championship with nothing to lose. He only knew that he had to perform his best.

WSL champion surfer competes for the last time at Bell Beach showdown 2023

33-year-old surfer Owen Wright competed for the last time at Rip Curl Pro 2023 and entered his retirement phase. The four-time WSL champion suffered a life-threatening brain injury in 2015. That incident took away Wright’s surfing skills completely.

However, his passion for the sport pushed him to re-learn surfing. With a year’s practice, the Australian surfer bounced back with a significant victory in 2017 at the World Surfing League Quicksilver Pro Gold Coast at Snappers Rocks. Later on, he won his country’s first bronze medal at the 2021 Tokyo Olympics. In 2023, Wright decided to avoid the risk of injuries. Hence, he declared the conclusion of his surfing career at the championship.
