Although surfing is one of the most thrilling sports in the world, it is equally risky. Therefore, there are surfing lifesavers who are always keenly observing the sea to minimize mishaps. In March 2023, 20-year-old Lucy Stroud saved an innocent life at the sea after returning from a tiring day at a surf lifesaving championship. Her courageous and selfless gesture made headlines revealing how she managed to save the man.

On April 28, the online news website, ‘nzherald.co.nz’ reported about Stroud’s life-saving act a day before the finale of her big championship in New Zealand. Moreover, the source gave trivia about how the Christchurch native gained interest in surfing lifesaving.

Lucy Stroud jumped into the sea right without thinking much

Lucy Stroud was a competitor for her club, ‘Taylors Mistake Surf Life Saving Club’ at the New Zealand surf lifesaving championships. After a long day of competing at multiple draining and challenging events, she returned to her club to relax. She was taking her recovery dip as she had her finals the next day.

However, in no time she was alerted about a swimmer struggling in strong currents. Immediately, the surf lifesaver got her hands on a rescue board from the club and ran in to save the jeopardized man.

She told the online website, “When I heard someone was in trouble, I knew I’d have to get something to go help them.” She added, “I was just glad I was there and able to help out.”

Furthermore, she revealed that the situation was pretty tricky. She had to use her mental and physical strength to save the man. Also, with help from fellow surfers, Lucy brought the man to the shore. She explained, “You never know what situation you’re getting yourself into.” She also told, “I just decided to go out, go for a paddle, go see what was happening…you don’t know what you’re going to find out there.”

Immediately, the man received medical assistance to deal with his hypothermia symptoms and was then taken to the hospital.

The next day, when she competed at the finale, she stood in an overall ninth position. Lucy also collected top 10 finishes in various other categories.

Moreover, for her courageous act as she received the bp Rescue of the Month and a $500 fuel voucher for her club.

Lucy Stroud belongs to an athletic background

Lucy Stroud’s father played football and her mother participated in the Rugby World Cup in 1991 and was a netballer. Although her parents belonged to different sports, they never forced her to follow their path. Lucy was always encouraged to do something of her own.

Hence, she joined the surfing lifesaving club at a young age. Lucy has been a part of the Taylors Mistake for the last 12 years. The young lifesaver is currently pursuing her degree at the University of Canterbury in psychology and criminal justice.
