“Had an Aura to Him”: Longtime Friend of Deceased Hawaiian Surfing Legend Recalls Fond Memory

Legends never die. Their beautiful memories & contributions are cherished forever. The late Mikala Jones is a true testament to this statement. The global surfing community is united in grief over the sudden loss of a legendary Hawaiian surfer, who was also known for his fearless wave-riding and amazing photography skills.

At the age of just 44, Jones lost his life in a surfing accident near Awera Resort in North Sipora, Indonesia. His passing has created an irreplaceable void. His movements in the ocean and the captivating pictures that were captured won the hearts of his supporters. Additionally, the words spoken by his friends have evoked strong emotions within the surfing community.

Coming Together to Remember Surfing King, Mikala

A revered figure known for his contributions to the sport, Jones’ legacy transcended his achievements. According to SURFLINE News, he was a positive and chill person. His friend, Rocky Cannon said beautiful words for Jones: “I was fortunate to find out firsthand how incredibly generous, genuine, & hilarious Mikala was. I will be forever grateful to have known him and truly appreciate his humility & pure, authentic friendship that positively influenced my life & perspectives”

The magnitude of the response underscores the profound influence Mikala Jones held in the hearts of countless individuals.

Jones’ friends and fellow surfers fondly remember him as more than just a surfing talent; he exuded an inexplicable aura that naturally attracted people to him. Phil McDonald, a close friend, recalls Jones’ magnetic presence, “MJ was quiet, but you always felt his presence… He had an aura to him that just attracted people. It didn’t matter where you lived, or your culture, age, or surfing ability — Mikala always had time and would always include you.” 

The Man Behind the Legend

Becoming an amateur champion at the age of 12, he embraced mastery in tube riding. Jones’ legacy extended beyond the waves; his iconic GoPro lens work provided glimpses into his profound relationship with the sea. Balancing globe-trotting quests with a devotion to his family, Jones inspired through his example.

His friend, Tory Barron said, “Every time I hear the ocean crash and the waves pounding, I think of Mikala, wishing that I could walk up on his front lawn to check out the spitting barrels at Rocky Rights, like I always have, and see his grumpy, happy, smirky smile every morning.”

Jones’s journey mirrored his adventurous spirit. His union with Emma, his wife, was a product of serendipity in Bali. Together, they crafted a life that balanced family, surfing, and adventure. While embracing the role of a family man, Jones continued to chase waves around the globe, savoring the thrill of each new discovery.
