Surfing is one of the most physically-demanding sports in the world. The amount of physical and mental fitness required to surf is extremely higher than in any other sport. Despite all that, have you ever seen a high-wave surfer with abs? Most probably, the answer will be no. But why is that so? If the athlete is performing high-intensity physical work for hours nonstop in his day-to-day life, then why doesn’t he/she have abs? Recently, the surfing legend Kelly Slater got embarrassed by a similar question, which was explained by a wave multiplier coach on Instagram.

The surfing coach/fitness trainer shared the reasons behind the same in the Instagram post from his official Instagram id called Hydromind. However, when Slater saw this post, he shared the post on his Instagram story and replied with a quirky comment about himself.

Keil Russ is the instructor who manages the Instagram account ‘Hydormind’. Other than that, he also teaches surfing and several waterman methods to his students across 50 countries. In the Instagram post that attracted Slater’s attention, he talked about the pro surfer and the absence of abs in their physique. However, he wasn’t addressing the fact in a negative way. What was the connection between abs and pro surfers?

Through the post, Russ wanted to share the theory of ‘your performance weight’, which is about prioritizing performance rather than the physique. According to Russ, surfers don’t have very low body fat. At the same time, they also don’t exceed a certain weight limit. But they like to stay at a point where they feel good in the water and enjoy surfing. The caption said, “I call this “Your Performance Weight” But it’s not actually a number… It’s about how you FEEL and perform in the water.”
