Surfing became popular when social media was not a household thing. It introduced various legendary surfers in the industry like Mick Fanning, Mark Richards, and many others. Moreover, in those days surfers had really restricted money-making resources.

In Rothman’s podcast, he revealed that previously surfers would depend on surfing companies. Brands would get attracted to those surfers who would perform well or do crazy surfing styles. They would immediately sign them up for endorsing their brands. Surfers would wear the company’s t-shirts or appear in their magazines. That’s how they would get money.

However, now the situation has changed completely and the credit majorly goes to social media. Rothman explained in his vlog, “ Now full change there are so many ways to make money as a surfer even a lot of people who aren’t professional.” Surfers are now capitalizing off by just their presence on social media. Indeed, surfers are now creating a financial resource for themselves by endorsing and collaborating with brands off and on social media. Furthermore, Rothman expressed what he thinks of such a huge change, “ I honestly really really like where it’s gone because it gives you so many more outlets and you rely far less on like bigger corporations I guess”
