Erin Brooks is a Texan-born athlete who has known her way around the ocean since she was nine. The 15-year-old athlete is unstoppable and has girded up to reach the pinnacle of her beloved sport by participating in the Olympics in 2024. But unfortunately, due to her citizenship complications, the athlete is currently in hot waters.
Although the 15-year-old athlete was born in Texas, Brooks has Canadian roots. Her grandparents, who reside in California, are originally from Quebec, and her extended relatives still live in Canada. Nevertheless, according to the ISA, the surfer herself, is not a Canadian and hence the organization revved her participation from the Olympics, and banned her from representing Canada.

On June 27, The International Surfing Association (ISA) reportedly suspended Erin Brooks’ candidature. And seemingly, she will not be allowed to participate in the Olympics in 2024. The suspension comes as a result of the fact that Erin Brooks does not hold Canadian citizenship, although the Texan-born athlete claimed to hold dual citizenship.
On Tuesday, the ISA released a statement: “The ISA takes responsibility for the administrative error made, so we would like to express our deep regret and offer our apologies to Ms. Brooks and her family for the impact this case may have on her personally, with the hope that this case of her citizenship will be resolved promptly.”. The authorities added, “The ISA EC has been seeking legal counsel on this issue and will continue to do so in terms of the next steps and consequences of this case.”
In the beginning, on the basis of assurances delivered by COC (the Canadian Olympic Committee), ISA decided to grant the surfer’s request to compete. But unfortunately, after reviewing the process, the ISA decided to withdraw the permission as it was violating the rules. Although Brooks had a high chance of grabbing a medal at the Olympics in 2024, ISA is not willing to let the surfer participate now. In the wake of this, many people have come up to show their support to the surfer.
