Stephanie Gilmore is one of the most successful surfers of all time. She has won eight surfing world championships, with the latest one in the 2022 Rip Curl WSL Finals at the Surf City El Salvador Pro. She has the power of a hurricane, but that is tempered by the gracefulness of a ballerina. Her father summarized it well, saying, “She looks majestic on a wave”. Now, this iconic sportswoman has drawn attention to herself once again, not by her surfing skill but by her million-dollar spending.
Surfing legend Stephanie Gilmore has invested $2.7 million in a development site in Byron Bay’s Massinger Street. More than the beauty of the beachfront property, Gilmore preferred the peace and privacy of the place. After a violent attack from a homeless man outside her previous abode in 2010, she loved that this place was more secluded and secure. Was privacy the only factor in Stephanie Gilmore’s purchase decision? Or did the property have more to offer? Let’s find out!

Stephanie Gilmore has the business acumen of a seasoned entrepreneur. She bought the 1970s home in its original condition at a bargain price, considering its advantageous location. The home is located right in the middle of Massinger Street between Clarkes Beach and the famous Top Shop Cafe. For the surfing paragon, quick access to the beach was essential, but she did not want her home to feel exposed. Therefore, the property is hidden by foliage and is inconspicuously placed at the end of a slip road. As per reports on realestate.com.au, the home features three bedrooms and two bathrooms planned in an open format. Gilmore’s business sense is reflected in her decision to buy such a property that has so many development possibilities.
The home sits on a massive 767m2 block of land. This gives the property ample space for future expansion or renovations. The surfing world champion is still unmarried; hence, this current living space may suffice for now. But, when and if she gets married and starts her family, she can add more rooms to the home as needed. Although these unique qualities of the home were sufficient for her to make the purchase, the home’s surfing connection sweetened the deal.

Many surfers are buying properties in the area. For Stephanie Gilmore, the chance of living in her community raised the allure of this Massinger Street home. Just about 400 meters away from Gilmore’s new home, retired surfing legend Owen Wright is also developing four massive villas. Owen Wright and Burke Urban have invested $26 million in this development project. The two investors are keeping one villa each for themselves and selling the other two. One is already off the market and fetched a hefty $6.5 million sale for the duo.

Gilmore is selling one of her properties in Rainbow Bay through Property Now. She was seeking somewhere around 850k to 930k for the two-bedroom home, but the final sale price is still under wraps. It is unclear if Stephanie Gilmore will live in the Massinger Street home or sell it to make a profit. No requests for development have been registered from her side, so her intentions with the home are still unclear.
