As per news.com.au, on Sunday at 4:15 pm, rescue calls were incessantly made to Boulder Beach in Byron Bay. Local surfer and lifeguard since 2020, Michael “Crispy” Crisp, revealed to the new website that he was surfing with his kids in the ocean when he saw people pointing at a particular spot offshore. He noticed unusual activity down a rocky platform to get to the ocean. He told, “I saw a police officer running down with a lifeguard, and I told the kids to into shore. I paddled out to where the two were.”
Crispy shared that two brothers aged 57 and 34 respectively were fishing on the rocks above the water when the former fell into the ocean. His younger brother also jumped in to save him. However, the duo had nothing to safely hold and float, and therefore started drowning. On noticing the intensity of the situation, he paddled to rescue the duo. The lifeguard explained the situation of the drowning men, saying, “One was conscious, but one wasn’t, so I did a quick check on him before getting him on the board and holding him with a leg hook.”
They were taken to a small sandy spot on the beach. According to the lifeguard, the elder brother had given up while drowning. Even when the paramedics provided him with CPR, he stayed unresponsive. On the other hand, the younger brother had gulped in a great amount of water which made him sick. Besides sharing the chilling ordeals from the incident, Crispy also had a request for water enthusiasts.

While carrying out the rescue operation, Crispy noticed that the surfers involved with him were trained for emergencies. So, they could easily paddle out with men hooked to their surfboards. Stressing the importance of training, Crispy urged water enthusiasts to spend ample time in the water before blankly performing any kind of water sports.
He added, “you never know when the weather will change”. Crispy told budding surfers and swimmers to engage with their local clubs and talk to fishermen to master intricate aspects of emergencies. He explained to them that crisis management required physical training which should not be attempted to learn through apps.
