One of the most concerning aspects of surfing is shark attacks. From commoners to professional surfers, these attacks are prone to happen to everyone. Recently, a heart-wrenching incident of a 50-year-old man’s shark attack was reported in Jefferys Bay. The Cape Town man was surfing at a popular town in South Africa when he encountered a shark bite. Luckily, a bystander happened to notice him.

On May 3, news website, News 24 reported the shocking incident of the 50-year-old. He received immediate attention from the localities and the NSRI team, which eventually led him to recover from the traumatic incident.

What happened at the shark attack scene?

On Wednesday evening, a man was surfing at Supertubes at Jeffreys Bay when he experienced a shark bite. Fortunately, a bystander spotted the man and immediately reached out for help. He received the access code to the NSRI shark bite kit located at the beach.

Along with commencing the NSRI rescue teams, the bystander also contacted other medical and rescue helps like Gardmed ambulance services, the SA Police Services, and EC Government Health EMS.

However, by the time the helpers reached the location, the man was already pulled out of the water by local surfers. They applied trauma pads to the man’s shark bite. Later on, paramedics placed the surfer on a stretcher and took him to the hospital in an ambulance.

Following this, Craig Lambinon, NSRI spokesperson, told News 24, “The patient, believed to be aged 50 from Cape Town, was in a stable condition and he was in good spirits.” Moreover, the NSRI team also thanked the localities for their immediate attention to the shark-bitten man.

After the horrific incident, the spokesperson revealed that the safety authorities have pleaded to the surfers and bathers of the beach to maintain precautions while spending their time in Jefferys Bay.

In the last few years, shark attacks have become a concerning factor in many parts of the world. So much so that it lead to the cancellation of one of the biggest surf events organized by the World Surf League in 2018.

Repeated shark attacks made WSL prioritize the safety of its surfers

In 2018, two back-to-back shark attacks occurred at beaches a few miles away from the Margaret River Pro competition site. In one of the incidents, a man while surfing, experienced shark bites in the leg at Cobblestones. A few days after, another man was attacked at Lefthander’s break. Although both the victims received medical treatment in Perth, none of them survived the injuries.

As a concerning affair, the WSL that organizes the Margaret River Pro competition decided to cancel the remainder of the event. Sophie Goldschmidt, executive of WSL chief, told in an interview with the Sydney Herald that the organization became apprehensive that something terrible could happen. Hence, they canceled the event for the better.
