They say the need is the parent of the invention. The same phrase was implemented by Ben Gravy, the pro surfer and wave hunter from Pennsylvania, who created a cheap and affordable wave-generating machine. Unlike, the one made by Kelly Slater’s company which is giant, and expensive, this machine is economical, uncomplicated, and requires little equipment. Gravy has stunned the world with his creation.
Surfing enthusiasts are always searching for ways to provide a surfing experience on a straight water surface or pool. The notion is to provide a safe and controlled environment for the machine, before getting experience in real water. Ben Gravy channelized his inner Kelly Slater and was in search of methods of forming artificial waves which require less effort and capital. The YouTuber has posted a video on his dream realization.

Ben drew his inspiration from the trucks, which, while passing on the flooded streets, created waves in the front. His idea was to have a system that can be applied even in the backyard. His machine consists of a truck, steel tubes, plates, and plywood. The plan was to fit the ply on the front of the truck in plow style with the help of steel tubes and plates for suspension. With enough space between the ply and the truck front, the waves will be generated. According to his estimate, it would generate four feet waves and achieve the required result.
In the initial experiment stage, it didn’t work as planned. Ben and his team were able to create swamp waves and got a problem with the truck. It got stuck and started to sink before they managed to pull it and start it once again. After a few attempts, they got the taste of success. They were riding the waves and got the perfect idea of wave wake. They continued longer than expected. After the challenge, Ben acknowledged the effort of team members and said “We made my dream become a reality today and yes the wave is about a quarter the size of what we thought it could possibly be“. He ended his remarks by saying that they did it and encouraged people to never abandon one’s dreams no matter how hard it is.?
Promising cheap wave result and realization of a dream
This cheap wave method has certainly created a breakthrough in artificial wave pool technology. It has attracted applause, comments, and suggestions from fans to improve it further. The hunt for artificial wave mechanisms is not a new pursuit. It goes back to the 19th century. Over the years, with the help of science and technology, the system grew more efficient but complicated.

At present, by using technologies like air compression, hydrofoil, levers, plunger, and water dumping artificial waves are created. For the pursuit of a cheaper but more effective method of the wave-creating machine, Ben’s team is set to experiment with more pointed ply at the front next time. Let us see what result it will pay.
