One of the most famous surfing events, The Eddie Aikau Big Wave International, returned after seven years on Sunday. Although it was a grand event inviting 40 surfers from around the world, it was also filled with shocks and surprises. This year, the ‘Super Bowl of Surfing’ became famous for the huge waves that crashed into the crowd in Hawaii’s Waimea Bay on the North Shore of O’ahu.

Netizens had multiple shocking reactions when they watched the giant waves creating a furore in the crowd that had gathered to witness the competition. So much so, parents were advised to hold on to their kids to avoid any mishaps.

Huge ocean waves are no surprise for the participants and the organizers. They expected the waves were expected to reach 50 to 60ft. However, at the recent surfing competition, things went out of control for the lifeguards. The onlookers denied to listen to them and stood very close to the ocean leaving behind the barricades. Hence, when the waves crashed onto the beach, the crowd went livid.

The video released on Facebook received multiple reactions from netizens, Take a look:

Never turn your back on the ocean!!!”

Many mocked the carelessness of onlookers standing ahead of barricades;

“I believe I saw a barricade…. you’re supposed to stand behiiiind it”

“If only someone had told them there’d be waves at the surf contest”

More people were amused by the behavior of the onlookers at the event;

Anyone notice that’ they’re all standing IN FRONT OF the barricades. That was meant to keep them off that beach? In case of maybe, big waves?!”

“Sometimes I think “man, people cannot get any dumber” and then bam! They get dumber.”

Although, the big waves may sound extremely scary but thankfully, no one was hurt in the incident. Moreover, the competition concluded with many deserving winners.

Indeed, this year’s surfing competition was filled with shocks and surprises. Apart from the super waves creating a mess in the crowd, the performances at the event were highly commendable.

Luke Shepardson, a local, on-duty lifeguard from Waimea beach, Oahu, Hawaii, won the prestigious championship in his first attempt. The lifeguard managed to catch the biggest waves at the competition, and when asked about how he felt, he stated that it was a “dream come true” moment for him.
