Nobody can deny the fact that Bethany Hamilton has been through quite a lot. At the age of 13, the now-34-year-old Bethany faced a brutal attack by a 14-foot tiger shark during a morning surf. It was an immensely dangerous situation, which could’ve resulted in her losing her life. Thankfully, those dire results were avoided, but she couldn’t come out scot-free. Bethany ended up losing her left arm as a result. Now it seems that the surfer needs help again as disaster has struck in her family.
On October 11th, Andrew, who is just shy of four years old, was found unconscious after having a fever and vomiting while soaking in an Epsom salt bath at home. Despite being a strong swimmer, even in the open ocean, tragedy struck, and now the family is praying for his kidney function and brain activity to return. However, the incident left him unconscious, and he had to be admitted to the Kapiʻolani Medical Center for Women & Children in Honolulu for treatment. The situation has threatened the three-year-old’s life as he needs treatment.
However, the family needs help with finances to succeed in doing so. On October 13th, Bethany posted on Instagram pleading with the community to assist them and give him the best chance to survive. She cited her example of the shark attack, saying, “I know how proper medical support can make or break someone’s chance of survival.” Now, on October 15th, Bethany again asked for help for her nephew on her Instagram story.

She put up the link for Andrew, her nephew’s support page, in supportnow.org. It has a goal of accumulating $100,000, out of which almost $17,353.29 has been raised until now. Bethany Hamilton is determined to gather enough funds for Andrew’s treatment, including potentially taking him to New Orleans for Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy (HBOT) under Dr. Paul Harch’s guidance.
The support page allows people to donate, send meals, or offer other assistance. Bethany and her family are also asking for prayers, meals for the children, and any tips or ideas for treatments that could aid Andrew’s recovery. Every bit of help makes a difference, whether through a donation, a meal, or simply sharing their story. But that’s not all.
The surfer put up another story after the one with the support page. In that, she uploaded a picture of Andrew with her own son carrying a surfboard. She captioned the story with the bible verse Psalm 27:13. It said, “I had fainted, unless I had believed to see the goodness of the Lord in the land of the living. Wait on the Lord; be of good courage, and he shall strengthen thine heart; wait, I say, on the Lord.”
This shows Bethany Hamilton’s unshakable belief that her nephew, Andrew, can make it through this difficult time. And why shouldn’t she believe that? If anyone understands beating the odds, it’s Bethany. Few people have faced the kind of challenges she has—losing her arm in a shark attack at 13, and not only surviving but going on to thrive in both her personal and professional life.
