Does Prince Harry's surfing adventure at Kelly Slater's ranch redefine royal leisure activities?

Well, the Paris Olympics concluded 2 months ago, but it seems the royal family is still very much engrossed in the sports scene. While Prince Harry paid a surprise visit to Kelly Slater’s ranch recently, His Majesty decided he’d also get in on the action. In a recent interaction with Australian surfers, King Charles marveled at the incredible surfing facilities at Bondi Beach.

Taking to her X account, Kelly Sloane, the Member for Vaucluse, expressed her excitement, posting a picture of King Charles exchanging pleasantries with the Aussie surfers. She captioned the post, “His Majesty sends his best to the “amazing” surf clubs at Bondi Beach. It was wonderful to have a brief chat with the King as he helped us celebrate the bicentenary of NSW Parliament. ”

This marks King Charles’ first visit to Australia since becoming head of state in 2022, and what a visit it’s shaping up to be! Besides catching up with surfers, he’s also celebrating the bicentenary of the NSW Parliament and meeting some big names in politics and community leadership. And if that wasn’t impressive enough, he’s doing it all while juggling cancer treatment that began earlier this year. And, of course, this isn’t the first time a royal has shown interest in an Olympic sport.

Not too long ago, the Duke of Sussex was spotted surfing his way to happiness at Kelly Slater’s man-made wave facility in Lemoore, California. Of course, Kelly Slater himself was there, giving Harry some tips. The surfing world was quite impressed with the Duke’s skills. In a viral clip circulating on social media, Prince Harry had none other than Raimana Van Bastolaer, the Tahitian big-wave surfer, stepping into full coach mode.

In the video, Harry smoothly rode a wave, keeping his balance like a pro, and Bastolaer couldn’t contain his excitement. He cheered on with a heartfelt, “You’re the best! Love you, brother!” The bond didn’t end there—Bastolaer later posted about their surfing adventure on Instagram, calling Prince Harry his ‘brother.’ He captioned it, “In Tahiti, we still call you Prince Harry, but at Surf Ranch, it’s my Brother.” However, Prince Harry and King Charles are not the only big names interested in the sport of surfing. Kelly Slater’s ranch also had some more popular faces.
