In the wake of a report released by former U.S. Attorney General Sally Q. Yates on Monday, soccer legend Megan Rapinoe demanded action against team ownership in MLS. The 300-page report details allegations and suggestions for the league and U.S. Soccer. 

On several occasions, the sports world has witnessed Rapinoe’s bold opinions and demand for gender equality. The Olympic gold medalist advocated the need for equal pay. Also, she empowered others to raise their voice against it. Exerting her powerful voice, she sets out to bring attention to the need for some critical changes in the National Women’s Soccer League.

Failed to take action

It took a year to investigate. The report stated that the NWSL and U.S.Soccer didn’t take action against “pervasive” and “systemic” abusive behavior and sexual misconduct. It also stated,And no one at the teams, League or the Federation demanded better of coaches.”

Despite reporting repeatedly abusive behavior by coaches, Thorns’ owner Merritt Paulson and Red Stars’ owner Arnim Whisler did nothing about it. In connection with this, Rapinoe said at a news conference, “I don’t think Merritt Paulson is fit to be the owner of that team. I don’t think Arnim is fit to be the owner of Chicago.”

Furthermore, she affirmed, “We need to see those people gone,”  to make way for people who are fit, who will respect the game for the growth of the sport and benefit of the team. The USWNT star also took to Instagram to share it in her story.

In 2021, the reports by The Athletic and the Washington Post brought to light misconduct by Paul Riley, one of the most prominent coaches in NWSL, and Rory Dames, the coach with the longest tenure in the league. The investigations revealed a toxic culture of abuse and misconduct.

Several players reported verbal, physical, and emotional misconduct by coaches and team officials. Unfortunately, no action was taken. “They didn’t protect the players,” she added. Moreover, Rapinoe said it was impossible to overstate that someone said something about multiple coaches every year.

U.S. Soccer has said it will consider the recommendations from Yates and take necessary action. In addition, Rapinoe emphasized players need to be assured that they are heard, and respected. Also, any sort of misbehavior wouldn’t be tolerated.
