“My Mom Actually Interrupted…”: Snowboarding Legend Shaun White Recounts His Mother’s Influence on His Career

Shaun White is undoubtedly one of the most successful snowboarders of all time. However, the great athlete was born with an intrinsic deformity. White was born with a heart defect called Tetralogy Of Fallot that leads to multiple fatal situations. But White had two heart operations before age one and he has been completely healthy since then. 

White’s family always had a zeal for sports. His father grew up surfing on the beaches of California. And his elder brother, more of a best friend Jesse White, introduced him to snowboarding. He followed his brother’s footsteps, switching from skiing to snowboarding, and by the age of six, he grew up a zeal for the board. In a recent interview with ‘Business Beyond The Game,’ White speaks about his snowboarding brand called, ‘ pace.’ Shaun White reveals how he drew inspiration from his family history of boarding, especially his mom’s influence in snowboarding to build up the brand.

Shaun White holds the record for the most X Games and Olympic gold medals as a snowboarder and has also won 10 ESPY Awards in different categories. White keeps recalling his family’s impact to make him this successful. During his childhood, White’s family did not have a healthy income to help their son to pursue his dream of snowboarding, which is nevertheless one of the most expensive sports.

Interestingly, in an interview with Sportico, White shared several nooks and crannies of his childhood aspirations and revealed how his mom played a major role in his journey.

Speaking of parents’ impact on children’s dreams, White looked back to one of his happy snowboarding memory with his mother. He stated, “I know that feeling. When I was a kid, I got that. My mom actually interrupted the class because I had been coming home from school ‘Where’s my board’ I knew it was on the way, but I didn’t know when it was showing up and for a week, I was like is it here. And finally, it showed up, she interrupted the class, ‘Your board’s here’.” Nonetheless, he took inspiration from this anecdote and went on to create his own brand ‘Whitespace’.

Shaun White conceded that he was thrilled to see his first board after such a long wait and this is his inspiration to create the authenticity of snowboarding in his brand.

It produces some of the best snowboarding gear on the planet because it is all designed by an experienced snowboarder. White developed an enthusiasm for snowboarding at a very young age, and by the age of seven, he had his first snowboarding sponsor.

When White received his first snowboard at the age of seven, he could not hold his thrill to ride it, and he want other boarders to feel the same thrill after using his boards. Shaun White wanted his brand to reflect his essence of snowboarding. He has put his heart into creating the brand for enhancing the next generation’s experience and progression.
