James Bond movies have always been a package of thriller, action, drama, and a surprise often packed at the end of the movie. However, they also take their own sweet liberty in crafting a scene in a way that suits the narrative of the film. That includes showing a daring jump by a snowboarder into a crevasse in John Glen’s 1985 film ‘A View To A Kill’. The movie was a huge blockbuster earning nearly $50 million overall. But when pro snowboarder Scotty James saw this clip, as part of a GQ section, he couldn’t help but disagree with the scene.
Scotty James is an Australian snowboarder, who won a silver medal in the halfpipe event at last year’s Beijing Winter Olympics. Before he achieved that, he sat down with GQ Sports in January 2020 to break down snowboarding scenes from a movie. When he got to a particular scene, James had a technical issue with it.

A YouTube video by GQ Sports was titled, “Pro Snowboarder Scotty James Breaks Down Snowboarding Scenes from Movies”. James then starts breaking down various scenes from various movies, including one scene which involves skiing and snowboarding in A View To A Kill.
In this scene, a character replete in white snowboarding gear jumps into a crevasse. This is when James said, “I’m not sure you would jump into a crevasse like that if I’m honest”. James then went on to explain further, “Generally a crevasse is full of ice and you won’t be coming back up if you are coming down”.

While Scotty James was true in his account of bringing reality into the scene, any James Bond movie takes their creative freedom to an extent that will only be entertaining.
James Bond has survived worse conditions
In this scene from the film, James Bond is chased down the slopes. To escape, Bond uses all his snowboarding skills, and the movie’s entertainment requirement at the cost of bending reality allows that to happen. Roger Moore played the titular protagonist in the film and despite the less-than-believable scene, it provides ample entertainment. The entire backdrop of this scene is set around icebergs, and snowboarding, in general, would not be feasible here, believes Scotty James. James also previously opened up on the love-hate relationship between skiers and snowboarders.

James understood the liberty required for a scene to be entertaining enough. He said, “Maybe if you are being shot at, you might try…”, taking a humorous dig at the scene. While surviving a fall or jumping into a crevasse might be extremely difficult to survive, movie lovers would know that James Bond has survived scenarios with a slimmer chance of making it alive.
