With the Paris Olympics nearing as one of the marquee Summer Games, we can’t miss out on the Winter Olympics. The skiers grabbed the spotlight in the Winter Games, and over the years, we have been tasting the successes of a multitude of US skiing legends. While Mikaela Shiffrin reigns on top as the most decorated woman skier, we’re yet to have a US man at her shoulder level. But Gus Schumacher may be on his journey to the top already.
Schumacher, the 23-year-old young gun, had made history at the Junior World Ski Championships by being the first US man to win an individual race. That was back in 2020 when he was still in his teens. Fast forward to now, he made history in 2024 again, but this time, more than his fans, it captured his father’s heart.

At the 2024 Stifel Loppet Cup in Minneapolis, scheduled for February 18, 2024, Schumacher nabbed the 10km freestyle race. This win not only positioned him on top that day but also placed him as the first US male skier to win an individual event since Bill Koch in 1983. The Wisconsin native has garnered immense love and respect since, but nothing beats what the dad feels for his child. NBC Olympics and Paralympics’ X post reads, “Gus Schumacher (@august_schu) talks making history, signing autographs, and more with Cara Banks (@CaraBanksGC) on the Stifel Snow Show Saturday at 2:30 p.m. ET on @CNBC”. When asked about signing bibs, the 23-year-old said, “My dad started signing autographs too”.

But the most interesting part is what Gus said after this. “I would get to some bibs or things to sign and then I would see Gus. “Oh I’ve signed this”, then I would see Dad underneath it.. He has been signing stuff for me as ‘Gus Dad'”. This adorable moment had inarguably melted millions of hearts. Now, let’s take a look at what gained him fame.

After the path-breaking ski race, he said, “It’s hard to believe. I hope this is the first of many”. He became the third US man to be victorious in a World Cup race. Not only that, Alaskan Kikkan Randall’s record just crushed as Schumacher outdid him as the youngest American to win a World Cup.
