“It Was an Inside Joke”: Lindsey Vonn Had to Clarify Her Statement on J.J. Watt About ‘Groin Massage’ After Receiving Backlash Back in 2016

Lindsey Vonn has always been the poster girl in the Olympic Alpine Skiing domain. This four-time medal winner had her first breakthrough in 2006 and, since then, her journey has been nothing short of phenomenal. She is often seen making history, breaking records, and never backing down. She along with NFL star J.J. Watt was seen glamming up the evening at ESPYS 2016. 

The duo had glammed up, with Vonn donning a chic jumpsuit and JJ in a three-piece. But, this otherwise starry evening took an unforeseen turn when Vonn cracked a joke about the latter. Things didn’t settle so well after that. 

Lindsey Vonn apologized for her inappropriate joke

Originally many accused of Lindsey flirting with her on-stage partner. She initially praised J.J. for gifting the fans a great season despite all his injuries. She followed it up with the remark, “Lots of massages in the groin area,”. This blew up even more since Thomas’ partner Kealia Ohai Watt was in the audience that night. Lindsey debunked this inside joke while touring for her book, “Strong is the New Beautiful.”

“It was an inside joke,” Vonn said in an interview. “His physical therapists are all these middle-aged men who are rubbing his inner thigh. So I was giving him a hard time, not because I was rubbing his thigh, but because his physical therapists, old middle-aged men, were rubbing his thigh. So that was the joke.”

“Thomas’s girlfriend didn’t like it,” she said. But, Lindsey was quick to add that he did grasp her joke after all. For all that went down, Lindsey knew that the joke backfired on her. 

How Vonn and Watt became the misunderstood pair

Owing to this joke, the Watt-Vonn duo quickly fell into a sticky situation. The fans and media were quick to catch the joke and soon began tweeting about it. A few speculations were also made about this pair allegedly dropping hints about an affair. This was cleared by the Olympian too. However, apparently, there was no significant harm done and Watts, along with his partner, is still going strong.

While on the other side, Lindsey had life going for her too. She met with a few losses but came back better in the 2018 Olympics.
