Is Mikaela Shiffrin the greatest skier of all time, or does she still have more to prove?

Mikaela Shiffrin, considered the greatest Alpine skier in history is gearing up for her next FIS World Cup. Skiing in rugged, snowy terrain is quite a challenge in itself. But notching up 97 victories? Well, that’s something Shiffrin can definitely boast about. As expected, her connection with the sport runs deep in her family roots. Born as the second child of Jeff and Eileen Shiffrin, Mikaela’s mother was a skier herself. Her brother, Taylor, also attended Burke Mountain Academy, sparking further interest in Mikaela.

Being a high-achieving student, her performance in the sport was always promising. In what came as a triumphant surprise, Mikaela won both the GS and the Slalom at the 2010 Topolino Games. And the opponents she edged out? The best skiers from 40 countries! Idolizing Bode Miller and Janica Kostelic, Mikaela Shiffrin’s journey has come full circle, as she has now nearly surpassed the accomplishments of her idols. As she continues gliding through the snow and collecting golden accolades, here’s a comprehensive look at Mikaela Shiffrin’s astounding career.

Mikaela Shiffrin clinched her 97th overall World Cup victory last year, further extending her dominance beyond the reach of her competitors. With a total of nine race victories in the previous season, the FIS World Cup in Saalbach saw Shiffrin secure her seventh slalom victory of the year and 60th overall. Her unwavering determination and dominance in the sport enabled Shiffrin to tie the record for winning eight Crystal Globes, alongside Ingemar Stenmark and Lindsey Vonn.

The path to glory is always harder than the glory itself, and the race at Saalbach was no exception for Shiffrin. Initially, Mikaela found herself in second place after the first run, with Anna Swenn Larsson leading the pack. But there was no way Mikaela would let the opportunity for her emphatic 97th victory slip away. She upped the ante and closed the gap, clocking 1:53.22 to secure a decisive win.

Following her triumph, Mikaela was visibly excited while interacting with the FIS. Expressing elation at her final season race going pin-pointedly well for her, the champion skier also said, I am looking forward to next season already. I never focus too much on the numbers (winning statistics) but now feel okay with them. It is not pressure, it is just an honor.” Interestingly, as Mikaela’s career accomplishments already look astonishing, she had the opportunity to record 100 wins last season.

Unfortunately, a downhill debacle at Cortina d’Ampezzo resulted in a career-threatening injury for Mikaela, where she sustained a sprained tibiofibular ligament and MCL. This forced her to sit out for a significant period. However, the Olympic gold medalist’s hunger remains undiminished. As she looks forward to making further strides, here’s everything you need to know about her upcoming World Cup.
