Home/Olympics

Well, that was surprisingly quick. The era of social media has made it difficult to achieve sustained fame. One moment you are the talk of the town and the next just a forgotten trend. The Turkish “John Wick” Yusuf Dikec was looking to buck this trend. But now his comments have suddenly turned him from the coolest person in the world to an object of ridicule among the fans.

The iconic hand-in pocket and no technological gear look had turned Dikec into every shooting fan’s favorite person. It was for a good reason, too. After all, the sight of a normal shooter has become increasingly rare in the Olympic games. But then, sometimes remaining silent does more for you than speaking. Yusuf Dikec has just experienced it firsthand after his X post for Elon Musk received mixed responses from the X users.

Dikec had tagged the X owner in his post where he asked about that a robot would shoot straight every single time. Musk tweeted emphatically that-Robots will hit the center of the bullseye every time.” This garnered the attention of Dikec who retorted jocularly- “Hi Elon, do you think future robots can win medals at the Olympics with their hands in their pockets?” Later, Dikec invited Musk to answer that question by coming to Istanbul, the “cultural capital that unites continents.” While the tweet was a bit tongue-in-cheek, it didn’t go down well with the fans.

For instance, questions were raised about why Yusuf Dikec was almost pandering to Elon Musk. Despite being the owner and highly popular within the meme crowd, Musk remains a polarizing figure. As a result, whenever someone references him, it creates tremendous activity and buzz all across the internet. But this reference may have cost Dikec some of his newfound popularity as fans are now questioning whether he still has his aura or not.

Yusuf Dikec loses aura points after the Elon Musk tweet

Not the one to wait, Elon Musk replied almost immediately to Yusuf Dikec. “Robots will hit the center of the bullseye every time,” Musk said. Musk is a huge proponent of humanoid robots. Through his creation, Optimus and Neuralink he wants to create brain implants that can make people outperform professionals in sports. His reply shows just how much Musk believes in it.

Do you think Yusuf Dikec's decision to align with Elon Musk was a smart move or a huge mistake?

Have an interesting take?

“Went from the highest high to the lowest low,” said a fan. That is a sentiment shared by many fans. They believe that Dikec didn’t have to pander to Elon Musk. That the Turkish shooter was already enjoying a massive surge in form and didn’t need to be doing it. As a result, he has fallen at least a few pegs in the eyes of the fans.

“Just lost all your aura,” said another fan. That is also true. For a moment, Yusuf Dikec was the coolest man on the planet. His shooting style and natural swagger had turned him into a cultural phenomenon. Fans were interested in his history and everything related to him, but now this makes him look human. And that is something that most fans didn’t want to see.

“Bro went from top to negative aura in one tweet. Incredible,” noted another fan. That is the reality of modern fame. Before the age of the internet and social media, a celebrity lengthened his fame because of being mysterious and esoteric. But social media has made everything accessible and as a result of this exposure, one can lose everything in just one post, if it rubs people off the wrong way.

“You finally missed,” said another fan. So as it stands, the world’s most popular shooter has just missed his one shot to long-term fame. However, it isn’t like he can’t regain it again. But as of now, the unprecedented and total popularity of Yusuf Dikec has a hole in it. And that could get big soon.

So with Dikec falling prey to the traps of modern fame, once again the internet has won. Could he find a way to recoup his lost popularity or is this the beginning of the end of this Turkish shooter’s fame?
