Is the viral photo of the Thai shooter a testament to skill or just a clever Photoshop trick?

Move aside, Yusuf Dikec! A new contender has emerged at the Paris Olympics, as another photo started making the rounds of a man seemingly shooting without even glancing at his target.

Dubbed “another viral Olympic shooter”, the image has sparked widespread fascination and debate. The burning question on everyone’s mind: Is this remarkable feat genuine, or is it a masterful piece of digital trickery?

It’s time to fact-check this rapidly spreading viral image. So has the Olympics found another iconic shooter? Sadly, the answer is no. This image is not from the Olympics. In fact, it’s not even from this decade. It actually comes from Thailand and has actor-comedian Pongsak Pongsuwan aka Theng Therdtherng, in it.

So what exactly is the context of this image? The answer is quite simple. The image is a screenshot from a video of a Thai game show popular in the Southeast Asian country and is called “Ching Roi Ching Lan.” The core concept of the show revolves around the judges challenging each other to recreate a viral trick from all over the world. This video too is a part of that similar challenge. On close inspection of the viral image, it can clearly be determined that it had been photoshopped to include the words ‘Paris Olympics 2024’  in the background.

Hilariously, this is not the first time that a photoshopping fiasco has landed someone in the wrong place (read: trouble)!

Did you know, once a Los Angeles Lakers player was even called for a drug test, after his photoshopped images went viral?

A joke that went too far!

In 2019, the Lakers took their photoshopping habits a bit further when they uploaded several pictures of Alex Caruso hitting the gym. The 6-foot-5 point guard—who many will agree is anything but ripped—looked insanely jacked.

However, not in on the joke, the NBA league office promptly sent the player a “random” off-season drug test notice just one week later. Caruso even shared an Instagram Story showing a pink envelope that’s supposed to be the call-up letter.

As for the Paris Olympics’ breakout star, Dikec, he is completely unfazed by the attention. During an interview with the Turkish press, Dikec remained calm and explained where he got his style from. “My shooting technique is one of the rare shooting techniques in the world. I shoot with both eyes open. Even the referees are surprised by this,” Dikec said. However, his fame is only increasing.

Fans have begun dubbing Yusuf Dikec Olympics’ “John Wick.” The meme became so viral that even the makers of the iconic action series had to acknowledge its existence. But that might not be the peak of Dikec’s fame yet. Fans are just growing more and more interested in his life and experience. His technique too has mesmerized fans who have till now only seen technologically savvy shooters.
