Besides the swimmers and surfers winning hearts with their master strokes in the water, there are the rowers weaving magic with their oars. Inarguably, in such a contentious year, every sporting news will hint at the most awaited Paris Olympics 2024. In the same line, a rowing phenom Michelle Sechser is taking rounds of the internet. The 37-year-old was a part of the women’s lightweight double sculls events at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics. So, will she give it a shot this year too?

The California native has only silvers, that too, from the World Championships. Bronze from the Pan-Am Games and the World Cup II in the LW2x, Sechser doesn’t have a gold to show off yet. But she surely fancies one and the Paris Olympics may offer her one. But did she qualify?

According to a recent update by US Rowing, Michelle Sechser will compete in the lightweight women’s double sculls at the Summer Games. Primarily dominated by men, women in the rowing industry have unfurled victory since their entry in the 1976 Olympics. The strong effect can be felt even now when fans get to witness such a conversant talent like Sechser on stage. In the women’s lightweight doubles at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, Michelle and her co-rower finished fifth, only to keep their hopes up for the next.

The next is just days away and will fling open gates on 26th July. Just the following day on the 27th, the Californian will grasp the oars to fight out in the quiet waters. But nothing without her biggest support, Mary Sechser. Seeing her daughter head towards the Olympics is nothing but a dream to her. So naturally, she takes a walk down memory lane.

Mary Sechser takes pride in her daughter

“It’s surreal, right? I have to stop for a moment and go, ‘Oh, that’s my daughter. I still see her as this young girl, and now she’s going to be doing this”, Mary expressed herself to ABC10. The rowing seed was first planted in Sechser’s older sister’s heart. Shortly after, the little one followed her path and developed a penchant for the sport as well. It’s been over 20 years since Michelle is associated with rowing.

“You don’t see a lot of athletes at that age, especially in rowing”, Mary conceded. Being 37, the Olympian may have few chances to make her dream team. So, this opportunity is not just a golden but beyond. Hopefully, she brings home a gold and brings joy to her mother.
