In Hawke’s Bay, in New Zealand, a familiar excitement is beginning to stir after years. The thrill waves carry a sense of nostalgia for tradition resurfacing. It hints at a long-awaited event set to grace the region once again after a very long halt.

Finally, after fifteen years, New Zealand will witness the electrifying energy of a rodeo. While Hawke’s Bay has seen its share of local rodeo events, there’s a unique fervor surrounding this famous event. As details start to unfold, the stage is set for an unforgettable spectacle that bridges generations’ gaps in the region’s heritage.

The road to bull riding revival

According to Hawke’s Bay TODAY News, The region has held onto its local bull riding events and division two rodeos in Mohaka, although the grandeur of open division rodeos faded away after 2008. But now, a spirited group led by the cowboy Joseph Whitelock will reclaim the glory of the past. 27-year-old Whitelock excites the community with his cheerful word, “Let’s get into it and we might as well give it a crack”.

Their journey began as casual conversations, a collective yearning to bring back the spirit of rodeo to their community. Slowly, determination evolved into action, and dreams began to take shape. This isn’t just about nostalgia, it’s about infusing the fervor that only Bullriding can ignite. He said, “After everything that’s happened we want to build a big event for the rural community, to come off the farms and into town, go to the rodeo and take their minds off things and enjoy themselves a little bit”. Amidst this longing for tradition, the organizers are hard at work. All of them are engaged in weaving together plans to create an event that will stand as a testament to both the past & the future.
