The 2024 Paris Olympics Opening Ceremony promises to have several surprises in store for fans. For the first time in history, the opening ceremony is to be held outside the stadium. Yet, this is only the beginning as several world-renowned performers will join the celebration on the Seine. Among them will be 13-time Grammy winner Lady Gaga and the 56-year-old Queen of Power Ballads.
Although Gaga is busy recording her 7th studio album, on July 11 rumors of her performing at the Olympics began swirling. On July 21st, reporters spotted Lady Gaga quietly landing in Paris indicating that she may grace the opening ceremony. They also traced the upcoming Joker: Folie à Deux co-lead to the Royal Monceau. Now, five-time Grammy Award winner Celine Dion has joined Gaga at the hotel near Champs-Élysées. While nothing has been confirmed, the timing and her choice of hotel seem too convenient to be a coincidence.
Although Variety didn’t get an answer from Celine Dion’s team, they believe that details of Dion’s Paris Olympics performance have been kept under wraps. However, the multi-platinum-selling pop icon had teased her comeback in April. “I’ve chosen to work with all my body and soul, from head to toe, with a medical team… My goal is to see the Eiffel Tower again!” Dion told Vogue.

In December 2022, Celine Dion announced that she had Stiff Person Syndrome, a rare autoimmune neurological disease. The news came two years after the ‘My Heart Will Go On’ singer’s last live performance in 2020. “For four years I’ve been saying to myself that I’m not going back, that I’m ready, that I’m not ready… My body will tell me,” Dion added during the Vogue interview.

However, the ‘Falling into You’ singer may have chosen the historic Paris Olympics Opening Ceremony as the stage for her historic comeback. Yet, the singer’s four-year battle with SPS has been a grueling one.
Celine Dion’s road to the Paris Olympics
In January 2022, the Francophone music icon abruptly canceled her tours as she grappled with the sudden onset of muscle spasms. By November, the veteran performer discovered the cause of the spasms. The incurable disease came as the singer’s worst nightmare. “It’s like somebody is strangling you. It’s like somebody is pushing your larynx/pharynx,” Dion said during an NBC interview in June.

Although incurable, the 16x Grammy-nominated singer assured fans that she wouldn’t give up on singing. It’s been two years since the 56-year-old made the announcement. During this time she has worked with sports physiotherapists, and specialists to fight SPS. It seems the treatment has bore fruit. NBC’s Hoda Kotb who spoke to Dion in June also spilled some behind-the-scenes details on Watch What Happens Live With Andy Cohen.
Kotb revealed that she asked the virtuoso about when she would perform again when Dion’s manager was off camera. However, when Dion asked if she could tell the NBC presenter, her manager screamed “‘No!’… I was like, there’s something.” revealed the 59-year-old. It seems all clues indicate that the Queen of Power Ballads may be ready to retake her throne, even if it’s for a single performance. What do you think? Share your thoughts in the comments below!
