After decades of popularity, surfing is experiencing its first denouement. More than 230,000 people oppose the necessary provisioning in anticipation of the Paris Olympics 2024 in Tahiti. The little Polynesian village of Teahupo’o has become the site of an environmental dispute despite Tony Estanguet’s repeated attempts at negotiation. At this critical juncture, an additional ecological challenge has beset the aquatic events slated for the Paris Olympics 2024, adding a further concern for the President of the Games.
A team of marine scientists from all over the world have sounded the siren on rising water temperatures. For Tony Estanguet, this presents a new obstacle threatening the success of the Paris Olympics 2024. Will the aquatic events be able to proceed as planned?

The annual research from a team of scientists concluded that the world has reached a point of no return regarding global warming. They warned that even if the carbon emissions are halted, the warming trend will persist throughout the century. The lead author of the study is a Chinese researcher by the name of Cheng Lijing. As reported in the English News, his findings stated, “Oceans also control how fast the Earth’s climate changes. To know what has happened or what will happen to the planet, answers can be found in the oceans”. He compared the rising water temperatures to “boiling away 2.3 billion Olympic-sized swimming pools”. The Olympic calendar in 2024 has several open-water aquatic events, such as the 10-kilometer swimming and surfing.
Lijing has cautioned about the supercharged storms that will likely be more sudden and frequent in 2024. His warnings came too late, as the Paris Olympics 2024 test event in August 2023 had to be canceled because of a random onset of a tempest. Scientists have also shown the path to postpone this climatic apocalypse.

Delaying the inevitable
Cheng Lijing is concerned that ocean warming has become an irreversible phenomenon, and even if greenhouse gas emissions were paused, the disastrous chain reactions would continue. However, he still holds out hope and has stipulated a plan to allow the aquatic events to run without hitches.

Lijing said, “This poses new challenges for climate governance, requiring not only emission reduction and increased use of renewable energy sources but also a greater focus on climate change adaptation.” Thus, with stricter monitoring, the world can enjoy its favorite aquatic events at the Paris Olympics 2024 without any worry.
