The occasion was the Olympics of 1972, held in Munich. Although the ’72 Olympics did have certain darkness related to it, the association has brought forth a happy incident in one specific throwback commemorating 50 years of the occasion. Safe to say, the tweet has gone viral for all the right reasons.
Olympics rivals reunite after 50 years.
The Olympics association recently produced a documentary titled “’72 – A Gathering of Champions.”. Notable Olympians to make an appearance in it are the likes of Olga Korbut, Heide Rosendahl, Kipchoge Keino, and Mary Peters. Directed by Jonathan Hock, the film left many viewers a tad teary-eyed. But, arguably, the best moment was when Mary Peters, now 83, was surprised by her long-time friend and co-competitor, Germany’s Heidi Rosendahl.
50 years ago Mary Peters won her gold at the 1972 Munich Olympics in the same stadium as the current European Championships. She brought it back to her old school, Portadown College. Mary was an Olympic gold medalist, best known for setting a world record at the Munich Olympics. In the shared video, the former gold medalist could be seen giving an interview, recounting her past performances. What she had no idea about was that her friend Rosendahl would sneak up to her to congratulate her. Instead, the moment was an ode to their moment, nearly 50 years earlier, when Rosendahl had done something similar after their games.
Fifty years ago, the rivals congratulated each other with a shoulder tap, followed by a hug after Mary won the gold, while Heidi accepted the silver gracefully.
