However, it wasn’t just him but also his jersey with number 99 that kept grabbing the viewers’ eyes during that time. Last year, that same jersey was again in the headlines. 

After Gretzky was traded to the LA Kings in 1988, people missed the iconic 99 number written on the white jersey. No one could think how a particular wearable will be associated with a player for the whole time.

Last year, in January 2022, the iconic Edmonton Oilers’ jersey worn by Wayne Gretzky went to auction. Fans were hoping that the jersey would get a decent amount. But no one anticipated the storm of money that would be involved in buying the 1988 fabric.

The most famous wearable of the mid-80s was sold at the whopping price of $1.452 million. According to NBC sports the price made it the world’s most valuable hockey jersey of all time. Gretzky broke the previous record of Paul Henderson, whose Canada jersey was sold at $1.3 million.

Wayne Gretzky wore that jersey for the last time in 1988. Gretzky took the Edmonton Oilers to their fourth Stanley Cup victory in the same jersey. No doubt, this piece of cloth was supposed to be the most expensive one, as it was worn by the greatest ever to step on the ice. However, it is secured in the elite Sports players’ club along with Michael Jordan and Tiger Woods who sold their wearables for millions

Wayne Gretzky is in the club with Jordan and Woods

While the chosen one’s favorite jersey created history in NHL sports, he has tough competition from other legends. Along with Gretzky, basketball legend Michael Jordan stands tall in this club. The NBA star sold his 1998 Finals jersey for $10.1 million last year in September. This made the jersey the most expensive item of the Jordan club.

Even the legendary golf player Tiger Woods became part of the elite group after selling his red polo shirt for $139,348. Woods wore the polo in the 2010 Masters final.
