Walter Gretzky was one of the constant faces in the stands who cheered for his son, Wayne Gretzky. However, once Gretzky Sr. almost got arrested in an attempt to make it to Wayne Gretzky’s match. Walter Gretzky wanted to surprise his son who was playing the ice hockey World cup match. However, he did not have the tickets to the match and was stuck outside the stadium.
Just when Gretzky Sr. thought his surprise would fail, his friend Charlie came up with a freaky idea.

Walter’s friend Charlie was a daring person and planned to make a run for getting seats. The two people were roaming in search of a door to crash. Finally, they got an edge over the guard as he looked the other way. Both friends started running towards the hallway. Everyone standing there started shouting after seeing the two complete strangers walking toward the arena.
Seeing people chasing them, Walter wondered whether agreeing to the plan was the right decision or not. “I was sure we’d get nabbed and hauled away to jail”, Walter wrote in his autobiography, Walter Gretzky: On Family, Hockey and Healing. However, soon Charlie found a way to the Canadian team’s bench. As they reached the dugout, the security guards jumped on them.
Finally, the team officials told the guards that he was The Great One’s father and the players took him to the team room. The Chosen one was stunned after seeing his father in the team room.,”What are you guys doing here?” Wayne asked. The thrilling story of his father’s escape broke him into laughter. However, it wasn’t the only time when Gretzky Sr. surprised Wayne with his gesture.

Walter was the constant companion and biggest critic of the Great One throughout his career. However, Walter once made a unique comment on the famous trade of Wayne from the Oilers to the LA Kings in 1988. In an interview, Wayne Gretzky revealed how his father summed up the scenario in just a few words.

Wayne Gretzky got married just a few weeks before the trade announcement. There was a popular notion that Gretzky made the trade happen as the newly wedded couple wanted to spend more time in America. Adding to the situation, Wayne said, “My dad said it best when he said this was the only time he would ever hear of a man doing an 18 million fever for his wife”.
