The Capitals could have lost their star man after this season as he would have become a free agent. However, the NHL franchise has finally secured their star forward’s commitment for another seven years. Tom Wilson tied down for another seven years

In a video posted on Twitter by the Capitals, Wilson not only announced his extension but also thanked the fans for their support. He said, “It’s really what I always wanted. The fan base, the organization, the city. It all means so much to me. I just wanted to say thank you for all the support over the years. You’ve made D.C. feel like home and I can’t wait to get started this season and keep it going.” 

Wilson’s contract extension is a whopping 7-year deal worth an impressive $45.5 million! This groundbreaking agreement will keep Wilson in the Capitals jersey through the 2030-31 season, making him an integral part of the team’s future.

Starting next season, his new contract extension will be worth around $6.5 million per year. It is only fair to say that Tom Wilson deserved every penny of his lucrative contract as his numbers speak for themselves. This season alone the NHL star had 22 points in 33 games as he racked up 13 goals and 9 assists in the process. To top it all up, he even led his team in 78 penalty minutes. His career-best year came in 2021-22 when he recorded 24 goals, 28 assists, and a whopping 52 points in just 78 games.

As far as his endurance and dedication were concerned in that season, he commanded ice time like never before, averaging an astonishing 18 minutes and 35 seconds per game. Wilson even went on to represent the Washington Capitals in the 2022 All-Star NHL Game. However, despite a staggering multi-million contract extension, Wilson still ranks way down when it comes to active contracts in the NHL.

Center Nathan MacKinnon is another active player who has a $100.8 million contract that he signed for 8 years with the Colorado Avalanche. MacKinnon also had a signing bonus of $85.3 million in his contract.
