Starting next season, his new contract extension will be worth around $6.5 million per year. It is only fair to say that Tom Wilson deserved every penny of his lucrative contract as his numbers speak for themselves. This season alone the NHL star had 22 points in 33 games as he racked up 13 goals and 9 assists in the process. To top it all up, he even led his team in 78 penalty minutes. His career-best year came in 2021-22 when he recorded 24 goals, 28 assists, and a whopping 52 points in just 78 games.
As far as his endurance and dedication were concerned in that season, he commanded ice time like never before, averaging an astonishing 18 minutes and 35 seconds per game. Wilson even went on to represent the Washington Capitals in the 2022 All-Star NHL Game. However, despite a staggering multi-million contract extension, Wilson still ranks way down when it comes to active contracts in the NHL.

NHL’s most valuable active contracts
The NHL hands out some of the most lucrative and long-term contracts to its athletes. While Tom Wilson’s $45.5 million extension is of immense value, it still falls short while competing with other players in the NHL. Defenseman Shea Weber tops the list with his $110 million contract with the Nashville Predators. It was signed for 14 long years and had a signing-on bonus of $68 million. Center Sidney Crosby comes in second with his $104.4 million contract with the Pittsburgh Penguins which has a runtime of 12 years. Center Nathan MacKinnon is another active player who has a $100.8 million contract that he signed for 8 years with the Colorado Avalanche. MacKinnon also had a signing bonus of $85.3 million in his contract.
