In 1992, Gretzky felt an unprecedented discomfort in his rib area. Initially, he overlooked it as an injury that would recover with some rest. To his horror, it turned out to be a rare and severe injury and the first of its kind among athletes. Having no proven track record of the success or failure of surgery, Wayne studied the situation carefully and took a call.
Wayne Gretzky was diagnosed with a herniated thoracic disk
What started as excruciating pain surrounding the rib area was later identified as a herniated disk in the lower back at the narrowest point of the spine. It was not an ordinary condition, as most cases of herniated disks are injuries in the lower back where the spinal cord is wider.
While rest and rehabilitation or retirement seemed safe among the given options, undergoing surgery was the most complicated one. Because any slight error could paralyze him. Also, it’s a narrow area, and there is a huge risk of damaging the nerves. After much deliberation and discussion, Gretzky decided to give up on surgery and chose a combination of physical therapy, time for recovery, and mediation.
The size of the disc gradually decreased over the next few months. And Gretzky eventually started training for the game. He didn’t make a goal for over a month until he stunned the NHL world with his astonishing recovery, as stated in the playoffs, “.. everybody thought I’d died. Nobody expected me to be playing. Nobody expected me to play this well.”

Gretzky’s Los Angeles Kings lost against Montreal Canadiens in the 1993 Stanley Cup. But Gretzky became the scoring leader with 40 points.
