NHL sensation Alexander Ovechkin hit the headlines once again as he inches closer to beating the NHL legend, Gordie Howe’s record of most goals with one franchise. The Russian ice-hockey superstar started with the Washington Capitals in 2005 and achieved the feat in his current 18th season.

Gordie Howe, nick-named Mr. Hockey, was well known for his record-making scores, athletic prowess, and competition in the NHL across five decades (1940–1980). As Ovi ties the record with Howe, he expressed his joy over his achievement. Also, he recounted meeting him and the time spent with him.

In the game against the Red Wings a month ago, in Detroit, Ovechkin made history as a Stanley Cup winner, Howe’s son, Mark witnessed the moment. Captain Ovi’s latest achievement of making the 786th goal with the Washington Capitals marks another major milestone in his career as he shares the top spot with Gordie Howe for the most number of goals.

‘The Great 8’ took 401 games fewer than Howe to reach the record number of career goals with the Capitals over 17 years. Ovi was delighted with the “huge” accomplishment.
Furthermore, he expressed his excitement, stating “And to tie with a legend, it is pretty big number and pretty cool accomplishment.” Ovi thought about the departed legend on this momentous occasion and missed his absence.

In 2016, Ovi met Mr. Hockey at the NHL All-Star Game. Describing Gordie as a “huge winner,” he regretted his passing. However, he was glad to have met him. “Greatest player to play hockey and I have a chance to shake his hand, talk about hockey, talk about everything. It was very good memory.”
