Home/Olympics

The NFL is currently at the center of attention across the sports world. Embroiled in a whirlwind of fan fights, controversies, and substitutions, it is making headlines across America. When it comes to controversies and debates in the NFL, one name always stands out: Dave Portnoy, affectionately known as the “Controversial King.”

From his famous pizza reviews to his sarcastic and cryptic Instagram polls, Portnoy has had his finger on the pulse of it all. He is the founder of Barstool Sports, an organization long banned by authorities. Nevertheless, he remains undeterred, sharing his suggestions and commentary. Recently, the Barstool Sports Twitter account posted a tweet featuring a snapshot of recent fan fights in the NFL, endorsing a rather unconventional solution. This solution has ignited a frenzy of questions and discussions, and Dave Portnoy’s support for it has further fueled the fire.

On September 18, Barstool Sports tweeted a proposal that reads, “It’s Time For NFL Teams To Put Designated Fight Clubs In Their Stadiums”. This caption effectively summarized the radical proposal that lay beneath it. However, reposting by Portnoy has captured the attention. He captioned, “This is actually a great idea.” His endorsement sparks intrigue, given his history of clashes with the NFL.

Rather than futilely hoping for fans to refrain from altercations, this solution aims to provide a controlled environment for those inclined to engage in such behavior. With designated fighting areas, fans having disputes can settle them without endangering innocent bystanders. If Barstool thinks well for the team and innocent people, then why was it banned by NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell?

Why was Dave Portnoy banned by Goodell?

Portnoy and Barstool Sports found themselves at odds with the NFL, leading to a ban that encompasses all NFL events.  From the Regular Season to the Playoffs, Draft, and even Super Bowl events. The roots of this clash can be traced back to the NFL’s handling of the Deflategate scandal, which Barstool Sports believed was mishandled. In response to their discontent, Dave Portnoy and three other Barstool Sports employees organized a protest outside the NFL’s headquarters. However, Portnoy took his protest a step further by creating towels featuring Goodell’s face adorned with a clown nose. An astounding 70,000 towels with this image were produced.

This ban was not a one-time encounter; rather, it marked the beginning of a series of confrontations between Barstool Sports and the NFL. Portnoy, along with Eric Sollenberger, attempted to infiltrate one of the NFL’s largest media events, the 2018 Super Bowl media day, disguising themselves to evade security. Their antics led to a chaotic media day, with Sollenberger even coaxing Rams running back Todd Gurley into uttering a profanity. Portnoy and Sollenberger did not relent, targeting Rams defensive tackle Ndamukong Suh, whom they deemed the NFL’s dirtiest player.

Despite their disguise efforts, both Portnoy and Sollenberger were eventually exposed and removed from the event. Portnoy even faced criminal trespassing charges, while Sollenberger was arrested for the same offense. Sollenberger claimed that he was interviewed by the FBI in connection with the incident. In light of these events, the prospects of Barstool Sports regaining access to the NFL seem dim, if not impossible.
