Team USA holds a phenomenal record in basketball at the Olympic Games. They won a remarkable 143 games, losing six, ever since the introduction of the sport at the Olympic stage in Berlin in 1936. Since then, they have claimed 16 gold, one silver, and two bronze medals in the competition from 19 appearances. With the 2024 Paris Olympics right around the corner, anticipation has heightened. Kevin Durant of the Phoenix Suns, in particular, keeps his fingers crossed.
On the line is a place in the 12-man roster for the Olympic Games in the City of Light. The US record-holder wants to make history on the banks of the river Seine. Team USA will be gunning for a fifth successive gold medal in Paris. Durant was part of the team that secured the last three of them. In the process, he equaled Carmelo Anthony‘s record for most golds secured by a US men’s basketball player. However, it is not the first of Anthony’s records Durant had eyed in the Olympic arena.

In three appearances at the Olympics, totaling 22 games, Kevin Durant went past Carmelo Anthony’s record of 336 points from 31 games. Anthony appeared in the Olympics on a record four occasions, starting in Athens in 2004. The Argentines upset the Americans that year, pipping them to the gold medal match and consigning them to the bronze. Durant now has a record 435 points to his name, averaging nearly 20 points a game, according to Olympics.com.
Should Durant be selected, the 35-year-old will equal Anthony’s record of four Olympic Games appearances. He will also look to add a fourth medal to his trophy cabinet, tied with Anthony once more. Durant was Team USA’s top scorer during the 2012 London Olympics and 2016 Rio Olympics. He scored 156 and 155 points then, respectively. Durant made it over 100 points for the third Olympic Games in a row in Tokyo. However, even with that track record, he does not consider himself a lock for a roster spot for a few reasons.

KD not a lock for a spot in Team USA for Paris
Two of them are named Stephen Curry and LeBron James. Curry announced he wants to be a part of Team USA in Paris, as has James. An Olympic appearance has continued to elude the former while the latter has not been part of that spectacle since 2012. In a recent interview with Yahoo Sports, Durant said, it is on the authorities whether to take one in the team or not. Though not assured of a spot, however, Durant believes his track record at the Olympics speaks for itself.

Kevin Durant, apart from breaking a few of Carmelo Anthony’s records, also holds the best average points per game of an American, as well as the most three-pointers with 71. Only David Robinson (124) and Anthony (125) lie ahead of him on the rebounds chart, wherein he has 118. Durant knows he cannot play forever. He will hope to add one more gold to his medal tally. Will he get a crack at that record-breaking fourth gold in Paris to etch his name further into the history books?
