Lady Gaga and Celine Dion at the Olympics—Is this the best opening ceremony lineup ever?

The 2024 Paris Olympics is set to start off with a bang. And who to announce the commencement of the year’s biggest sporting event than two of the most powerful voices in the world? The Olympic organizers seem to have roped in two trans-generational talents to make sure the Opening Ceremony turns enough heads to give the new few weeks the kind of traction they need.

Thierry Moreau, a French journalist, dropped the rather massive bomb on X just moments ago, and music and sports fans across the globe are losing their minds. “Evening news: @celinedion and @ladygaga rehearsed “La vie en rose”,” reads the caption of Moreau’s post when translated into English.

The song by Edith Piaf is considered a testament to how holding a positive outlook can change your perspective of the whole world around you, and with two of the biggest singing stars to spread the message on the grandest stage, we believe the athletes will also find the show an uplifting experience. The “My Heart Will Go On” singer Dion has been at the helm of the music industry for decades, while Lady Gaga has also been able to enthrall her audience with oomph and her signature singing style despite being much younger than the former.

While these two dishing out a memorable performance will elevate the entire tournament, the Opening Ceremony is certainly not running short on special features that are in line with the iconic host of this year’s Games.

For the first time in Olympic history, the Opening Ceremony will take place on a water body. The event will take place on the Seine River, as almost 100 boats have been prepared to carry the 10,500 participants. The stars will travel almost six kilometers along the waterways as viewers are expected to be treated to “a colourful river parade through the heart of the French capital“. According to Olympics.com, the 2024 Olympics will be the “largest Opening Ceremony in terms of audience and geographical coverage“. The route has also been decided in consideration of highlighting the major landmarks of the City of Love and places like Notre Dame, the Louvre, the Esplanade des Invalides, and the Grand Palais will serve as brilliant backdrops. The Opening Ceremony will come to an end at the Trocadero, just across the Eiffel Tower.

The responsibilities of overseeing the Opening Ceremony preparations have been handed to the French theatre director and actor Thomas Jolly. 400 dancers and 3,000 artists are also expected to participate in the Friday event. To make the ceremony more noteworthy, sustainability will play a key role in all the things that happen across the French city, claimed costume designer Daphne Burki.
