“I’m Going to Get Him in Skates Before He Got a Golf Club”: NHL Legend Wayne Gretzky Had a Hilarious Warning for Son-in-Law Dustin Johnson in 2015

If Wayne Gretzky is the ice-hockey GOAT, then his son-in-law is one of the most reputed golf players. The two share a cordial relationship and often share a fun banter. Dustin Johnson was engaged to the daughter of ice hockey legend Wayne since 2013. The couple shares two sons, Tatum, 7, and River, 4. Earlier this year, the two tied the knot in Tennessee. The official photos were released over social media.

Back in 2015, Wayne sat for a talk with ET Canada. In the interview, the retired sporting star could not stop himself from talking about his four-month-old grandson. Though the young lad was too young to crawl then, his father and grandfather could not resist discussing his future.

Golfer or skater? Grandad Wayne Gretzky settled the debate

As typical grandparents, Wayne and his wife were thrilled to welcome their grandson. While Janet was more focused on the baby’s cuteness, grandad Wayne was more concerned about his future. Born into a family of athletes, though Gretzky is assured that his grandson will pursue sports in the future, but, will it be golf or skating? There lies the debate.

Thus, even before father, Dustin, could have his say, Wayne declared, “I’m going to get him in skates before you get him a golf club” Speaking more about the conversation, Wayne revealed, “We were having a debate like is he going to do skating first or hitting golf ball first.” Though the retired athlete assures that they will not pressure the little boy, they can not help themselves with the fun banter.

Though Dustin could have had an altering perspective, grandad was in no mood to hear it out. Having won numerous titles and trophies, he was sure that “he is going to do skating first.” However, to know whether or not the young boy becomes a golfer or skater, one needs to wait for more years. 

Father-in-law Wayne praised his son-in-law Dustin for his endeavors

Coming from an athletic background, Wayne is well aware of the dedication and passion one needs to put on the field. In the Smartless podcast, the latter appreciated DJ’s enthusiasm. He confessed that playing beside him can sometimes be intimidating because he is a prolific player.

Nonetheless, they share a great bond. Wayne also appreciated Dustin for being a good father and a wonderful guy. Though Wayne had initial reservations about his daughter marrying Dustin, the father later happily accepted his daughter’s choice.
