October 28, at Aqueduct Racetrack, in the Chelsey Flower, was the turning point in Living Magic’s journey. With odds of 16-1 going into the race, Living Magic stunned the racing community with an outstanding showing. The daughter of well-known stallion Justify held a steady pace from second place but was overtaken by Ozara on the inside at the far bend. Despite a small setback, Living Magic’s adaptability was evident, and trainer Phil Schoenthal saw her early promise reported Racing dudes.

Noting her route defying all odds, he said, ?She ran poorly in her only other start on turf at Woodbine, but her figure in that race still matched up with a lot of the horses in her last one.? In the dirt ground, Ozara took the lead halfway up the stretch until Living Magic gave her best effort in the last furlong to win by a distance of 1 1/4 lengths.

What seemed to be a family characteristic was the filly’s surface adaptability. Living Magic was born into a family who had won big on graded stakes betting. Her mother had a talent for breaking through obstacles. Keeping up with the tradition, Living Magic marked many triumphs on the way.

Past Triumphs of Living Magic

A maiden victory at Parx Racing on May 1 marked the debut of Kentucky homebred Living Magic. She won her first race at Parx Racing’s main track. However, on June 11 at Belmont Park, she finished third in the Astoria. The sole off-the-board performance Living Magic had in her turf racing came on August 20 at Woodbine when she finished sixth in the Catch a Glimpse. Despite this disappointment, Schoenthal was taken aback by the long odds placed on his horse for the next Chelsey Flower.
