In the world of horse racing, Bob Baffert stands as a towering figure with a remarkable six Kentucky Derby victories under his belt, along with numerous Triple Crown wins. The Hall of Famer has trained horses for some of the most prominent owners in the world, including Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum’s Godolphin Racing, Ahmed Zayat, and Amr Zedan, among others. However, Baffert’s journey faced controversy in 2021 when his horse, Medina Spirit, tested positive for a banned substance after winning the Kentucky Derby. This led to Baffert’s suspension from the event for two years.
Then, despite a lack of violations during his initial suspension period, Churchill Downs Incorporated extended Baffert’s ban by an additional 1.5 years through 2024. With the 2024 Kentucky Derby in its 150th edition, Baffert’s legal entanglements and prolonged suspension now intensify the anticipation. As race day dwindles, all attention is on the unfolding drama, with Amr Zedan’s substantial investment of $10.7 million hanging in the balance like a ticking time bomb.

According to The Los Angeles Times, Amr Zedan, one of Bob Baffert’s clients, has filed a lawsuit seeking to overturn his suspension. The lawsuit aims to allow horses trained by Baffert, including those owned by Zedan, to participate in the upcoming Kentucky Derby. Zedan’s attorneys argue that the Saudi Arabian businessman invested $10.7 million in purchasing six horses, including Muth and Maymun, with the expectation that they could race in the 2024 Kentucky Derby under Baffert’s training. Muth recently won the Arkansas Derby, which would have earned him 100 qualifying points for the Kentucky Derby. However, because he was trained by Baffert, those points were not awarded.

Muth’s performance would have guaranteed him a spot in the Kentucky Derby if not for the suspension. If all goes well, Baffert could potentially have up to four horses running in the upcoming Santa Anita Derby. Bob Baffert said to the LA Times, “While I am not a plaintiff in the lawsuit recently brought by Zedan Racing Stables against Churchill Downs, I would like nothing more than for the horses I train to have an opportunity to run at Churchill Downs.” So what does the lawsuit challenge?
What does Amr Zedan’s lawsuit challenge?
The lawsuit challenges the grounds for Baffert’s extended suspension, arguing that it lacks a legal basis and undermines the integrity of the Kentucky Derby. Zedan’s lawyers also accuse Churchill Downs Incorporated of unfairly targeting Baffert. Amr Zedan said in a statement that he is an admirer of the Kentucky Derby and that filing the lawsuit was something he did not wish to do.

However, he shared that “given Bill Carstanjen’s (CDI chief executive) vindictive personal vendetta against our stable’s trainer Bob Baffert — who happens to be one of the most legendary trainers in the history of our sport — the horse racing industry I revere is being compromised.” With just 29 days for Zedan to save his millions from drowning, do you think the court will allow Baffert’s horses to race at the Kentucky Derby?
