Is Caleb Williams the key to the Bears' success, or is it all about team effort?

2024 has been like a European dream for Chicago Bears star and Simone Biles’ husband, Jonathan Owens. From travelling to Paris to support his Olympian wife earlier this year (a schedule he even negotiated into his NFL contract, which we’ll talk about later) to now making a return across the pond to continue his NFL journey, Owens has been a busy man. Well, it also helps that he usually gets VIP treatment, thanks to his wife. As the NFL safety recently revealed, “[At the Paris Olympics] my wife was the star of the show. I just felt like I was spoiled, I got VIP treatment around there and really got the chance to see the city, experience the art, the culture, the history of Paris. It was amazing.”

However, this time, as he’s set to travel to London, things will be far from easy. The Bears are scheduled to face the Jacksonville Jaguars at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium on October 13 (9:30 am ET)—the second game of the 2024 NFL International Series after the New York Jets vs Minnesota Vikings clash on October 6 at the same venue. Notably, the stadium has had an exclusive partnership with the NFL since 2013 to hold at least two games each season. In September, 2023, they extended the partnership through the 2029-2030 NFL season. Well, good for Owens, as he’s already perked up at the thought…

Talking to Sky Sports, the player revealed how the UK capital has been a favorite spot. “It’s a pretty amazing experience…I’m pretty familiar with just the travel and getting accommodated to everything, so this is pretty exciting to come and play in front of an international crowd and to continue expanding football around the world.

“The shopping is pretty dope. You have to keep the main thing (the game) as the main thing here, but you get to experience a little bit so that would be nice. Honestly, my favourite part is being in the culture…It’s so different, you hear everyone’s accent, you walk around and see these historic buildings. I was always a big history guy in school so I like seeing all the buildings,” he concluded. But what about the most important part?

The player will be looking forward to beating the familiar foes. The Jaguars are no new challenge for Owens. Back when he was signed with the Houston Texans from 2019 to 2022, Owens faced off against the Jaguars twice in every season. And he’s ready to clinch the Bears’ fourth win this season. “I think it’s just been everyone being on the same page,” said Owens of Chicago 3-2 record, before adding, “And everyone really being able to trust each other, it’s about going out there making plays. We brought a lot of good guys in this offseason and just continue to build that culture, everybody has meshed well and I’m excited to see it again Sunday.”

The 29-year-old has already made a promising case for himself during his first season with the Bears. In the team’s first game of the season vs the Tennessee Titans, the safety scored the first TD by recovering a blocked punt and returning it for a TD. Biles immediately took to X to write, “My heart”. And this is just one of many examples of when the couple has stood solid by each other. Owens himself spent a substantial time out to watch his beloved wife, Simone Biles, perform at the Olympics. Having watched his wife suffer and toil endlessly after her Tokyo debacle post a heartbreaking case of Twisties, it was important for the NFL star to support Biles on her comeback tour. Much to his delight, everything paid off quite smoothly as Biles completed her redemption arc, winning three gold and a silver medal.

Throughout Biles’ outing in Paris, Owens was constantly spotted taking notes and jotting down her points. While the crowd adored the love and concern, Biles mentioned that it was a habit that Owens had inculcated from Nellie and Ronald Biles. And while Biles took the team gold, the look on Owens’ face made it clear that all of his hard work had paid off, especially after he had to take special measures to be there for her. As per reports, the player and his representatives had approached the Chicago Bears months before Simone had even qualified for the Paris Olympics (well, does he even need to wait for the results to know she’ll qualify?), to negotiate a Paris clause in his contract.

“Obviously the Olympics were coming up and you know who my wife is…It was all respectful. We went to them and asked, ‘We’d really appreciate if he could go to support his wife’,” he revealed in July this year. As for his most recent challenge, while Owens is already confident, it seems another player has got a lot to do for the team’s success too. Can you guess who it is?

Jonathan Owens reflects on fellow Bears rookie

Joining his teammates in Chicago, Jonathan Owens finds himself in a strong position in the NFL league standings. After five matches, the Bears sit comfortably in 3rd place, behind the Vikings and Lions. With a .600 win percentage (PCT), they have a solid advantage in pushing for the top spot in the NFC North. While the Bears are enjoying this success, Owens is quick to give credit to the standout rookie, Caleb Williams, whose performances have been nothing short of remarkable.

At just 22, Caleb Williams is making waves as the second youngest player on the Bears’ roster. So far, he has played a pivotal role in the team’s success, breaking several records along the way. In Week 5, during their win against the Carolina Panthers, Williams recorded an NFL-leading 83.9 QBR. He also became the only Bears rookie to achieve more than one 300-yard passing game. Given Williams’ impressive performances this season, Jonathan Owens has not hesitated to give the young quarterback his well-deserved praise.

In the recent interview with Sky Sports, Jonathan Owens stated, “He’s handling this seamlessly… You come in, you’re the number one quarterback, you have all these expectations, everybody has an opinion on social media and man, he’s handled it with grace. And he will just continue to get better.” Hoping for a similar performance from the young phenom, Owens cited his excitement watching Williams own the field. He also mentioned that watching Williams every day in practice was a special experience altogether. Thus, with promising news coming in, the onus will be on Jonathan Owens and his team to march back to the US in flying colors.
