Does Simone Biles' reception in Phoenix prove she's the most beloved athlete in America?

It’s a matter of pride to be among the 30 cities hosting Simone Biles & Co. for the 2024 Gold Over America Tour. And currently, it’s time for the Phoenix denizens to live that dream! As the squad reached Footprint Center after a double gala in Oceanside, the town folk not only rolled out the red carpet but went all out by having three of their native stars present to welcome the gymnasts. PS: Two of them brought their Olympic golds along!

The GOAT tour is only at its second stop yet, but the hype already has WNBA stars pulled to the stage. Yes, you read that right! Phoenix Mercury royalty—Diana Taurasi, Brittney Griner, and Kahleah Copper—arrived at the arena to welcome America’s finest gymnasts to their hometown. The three not only posed with gymnasts on the stage but also for a picture with Biles after. And well, this turned out to be such a highlight moment for the gymnasts and the tour!

As the gymnasts wrapped up their Phoenix performance, all of them lined up on the stage, until the WNBA stars joined them and they all took a lap together. Indeed, it was a star-studded sight, full of gold medalist athletes! Diana Taurasi holds the record for being a six-time Olympic gold medalist, the most for an American basketball player. And as she high-fived Simone Biles, Team USA’s most decorated gymnast with 11x Olympics medals, the Phoenix Mercury captured the moment and captioned it, “Two GOATS 🐐🐐.”

It would not be wrong to say that the anticipation has been on a fever pitch at the Footprint Center lately. Well, when two all-time greats step up together, this is bound to happen, right? Not only was this the pitstop for Simone Biles’ GOAT tour show, but as they leave for Los Angeles, the arena now braces to be the house for Diana Taurasi’s final regular season game. But if this is truly it for Taurasi, did Biles just miss out on the chance to witness the GOAT’s final sign-off? Especially when she had just ticked her first WNBA game off the bucket list a few days ago, remember?
