The Women’s floor exercise final in Paris was marred by controversy when Romania’s Ana Barbosu lost her bronze medal spot following a Team USA inquiry. Unfortunately, Jordan Chiles found herself at the center of the drama, despite not faulting the matter. Although she wasn’t the one who appealed, Chiles became the target of backlash on social media. Thankfully, she had someone special standing by her side.

Earlier today, that mysterious partner made another sweet gesture for the Olympic gold medalist. Jordan Chiles uploaded an Instagram story showing her bed adorned with rose petals spelling out “Will you be my GF?” Her partner also left a separate bouquet of roses, heart-shaped balloons, and what seemed like scented candles. Yet, this isn’t the first time Chiles’ mystery man has made her day.

Jordan Chiles and her coach, Cécile Landi, burst into a joyful celebration when her score increased by 0.1 points, raising it to 13.766. As the 23-year-old celebrated her very first individual medal, Ana Barbosu and Sabrina Maneca-Voinea sank in despair. Shortly after the medal ceremony, the social media backlash began, with Chiles’ celebratory post met with vitriol from enraged Romanian fans.

As the 3x Olympic medalist’s moment of joy became clouded with controversy, her partner came to the rescue once again. “When he brings you flowers cause you haven’t had the best day,” wrote Team USA’s hype woman. The Olympian posted a snapshot of a beautiful bouquet of red and white roses and some candies, including the iconic Sour Patch Kids.

However, it doesn’t seem likely that Jordan Chiles is ready to reveal the identity of her supportive partner. The Olympic gold medalist has only posted about him twice, and it appears they’re not yet ready to go Instagram official. Nonetheless, the World Champions Centre gymnast will need her partner’s support in the coming days, as the controversy that began on the gymnastics floor in Paris has only intensified.

Could Jordan Chiles lose her third Olympic medal?

Romanian fans targeting Chiles is just the tip of the iceberg, as the controversy has now gone international. Romanian icon Nadia Comăneci, the first Olympic gymnast to earn a perfect 10.0, has spoken out against the decision. “I don’t think [the FIG] can ignore it. Clarity is needed for Sabrina and all of us,” said the 62-year-old. She also posted video evidence to back her claim that the supposed violation that cost Maneca-Voinea didn’t occur.

“Heel does not touch the mat…” Comăneci captioned the video, which shows only the elevated part of Maneca-Voinea’s foot grazing the line. But it wasn’t just furious Romanian fans and Olympic legends protesting the decision. Romanian Prime Minister Marcel Ciolacu called the decision to award Jordan Chiles the bronze medal a “scandal” on August 6. The Prime Minister went a step further, announcing he would boycott the closing ceremony.

The International Gymnastics Federation (FIG) is also under pressure from the Romanian Olympic and Sports Committee. The committee’s president, Mihai Covaliu, has criticized the FIG. Whether this international pressure will lead the FIG to review its decision again remains unclear. However, Jordan Chiles will have her mystery man to comfort her, regardless of the outcome.
