Home/Olympics

Missing out on the opportunity of a lifetime can never be easy. For LSU Tigers star Konnor McClain, the Xfinity US Gymnastics Championships could have been the stepping stone to international fame. However, as fate would have it, the reigning NCAA champ suffered a horrific injury at last month’s Core Hydration Classic, ending her hopes of competing in Connecticut for the nationals. However, while the young star receives major support from her coach to return to action, not everyone is on board with the decision.

For gymnasts, injuries are part and parcel of the game. However, with the Olympics around the corner, special attention to staying fit has become a quintessential thought. Taking that into account, gymnastics connoisseurs aren’t happy with Clark trying to get McClain back in action as soon as possible, despite her chance to fly to Paris coming to an end.

Konnor McClain probably won’t be on the sideline for too long

In the Reddit group r/Gymnastics, the latest update on Konnor’s condition has been shared. According to the post, the LSU gymnast underwent surgery on May 21, and Clark is hopeful that her return is only a matter of time. “If the rehab goes the way we think she could be ready on bars and beam to start the season and we’ll see how the rest goes. It takes six months to be released to begin high-impact stuff again.” the coach was quoted saying, as per reports of the New Orleans, LA (NOLA).

However, despite the uplifting news of McClain’s return being imminent, she isn’t likely to perform on the vault abd floor exercise anytime soon, notes the post. “Lower leg injuries are difficult to come back from on vault and floor because of the sprinting necessary and punching off the board or floor when tumbling,” reports NOLA about Clasrk’s thoughts on seeing Konnor in all four events in 2025.

Fans share cast their doubts on the decision

However, not everyone seems to be in any rush to see McClain starting the 2025 season with her coming across a major hiccup recently. User cdg2m4nrsvp seems to be at a loss for words about the situation and blurted out “I just… why push for her to compete vault and floor at all next year? Like let her fully heal and be a force for the two years after that.

6 months is asinine…” wrote another Redditor in the comment section, underscoing how bigger stars have succumbed to injuries before. Only in April, Rachel Swick, a veteran gymnast announced her etirment because of an injury, leaving fans heartbroken. Considering that, Clark should do well to prioritize Konnor’s health over the wish to allow her compete so soon.

BestKiwi8774 also shared their dubious thoughts about seeing McClain taking up the purple leotard after the Achilles injury last month. The fan’s skepticism prompoted them to comment, “Is it really possible for a gymnast to be ready in January after an injury like this or is the end of season much more realistic?” mirroring the feeling of many others in the gymnastics community.

LSU ended their last season on a supremely high note after lifting its first team NCAA title in program history. Stars like Olivia Dunne and Haleigh Bryant played pivotal roles in helping the team assert its dominance on the national stage, and starspeakr thinks Konnor’s ordeal can easily be mitigated by the others for the tim being. “I hope it’s the smart move. They have enough gymnasts at LSU. Really no need to rush her back even on two events.” wrote the fan.

ThunderBayOPP also thinks a break in 2025 should have been warranted for McClain, considering the trouble she’s had and the heartbreak she suffered after missing out the chance to get her spot in the national team for the upcoming Olympics. “if I were Jay, I would be encouraging Konnor to do ALL the rehab and come back swinging in 2026.” said the Redditor.
