Ana Barbosu's family seems rock-solid—how crucial is family support in an athlete's journey to success?

A remarkable turn of events! Five days after Romanian gymnast Ana Barbosu had to step down from the floor podium at the Paris Olympics, it looks like the latest development is about to overturn the result, causing heartbreak for the USA’s Jordan Chiles. While the 18-year-old gymnast celebrates, let’s take a look at the Barbosu family who has been waiting eagerly for the final verdict by the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) these last few days along with the Olympian.

For any athlete, having their family cheer for them is a massive benefit, that helps them stay motivated. With Ana feeling the impacts of her misfortune after the women’s individual floor routine, it seemed like her family grieved with her. But now, as the clouds disperse, let’s get to know the people who helped the gymnast find her calling.

According to Olympics.com, Ana comes from a typical family hailing from Focasani, Romania. Her father runs a construction company, while Pompilia, Ana’s mother, teaches Romanian in a grammar school. Naturally, for them, seeing their daughter on the grandest stage standing side by side with the likes of Rebeca Andrade and Simone Biles was a dream come true, which looked like a narrow miss just a few days ago.

With the twist of fate, we can only imagine that it’s only laughter that’s reigning supreme at the Barbosu household right now. In the case of Ana, her parents have been walking and nurturing the dream of her success on the grand stage for as long as the gymnast herself. Nothing how their daughter was an energetic person, her parents took her to the gym, where Ana instantly fell in love with the sport.

When I first went to the gym, there were some older girls doing elements on the floor, and when I saw them I was like, ‘Wow, I want that too’. I loved watching what they were doing,’ ” the gymnast was quoted saying in an article by Gazeta Sporturilor from 2020. The admiration that Ana found for gymnastics at the age of six finally culminated with her bronze at the 33rd Olympic Games. Ana also says her mother is the person who has always been by her side even when rough patches became a burden to bear. “She always tells me not to look away, to think how strong I am and think positive. She has always encouraged me to be independent and rely on my own strength,” said Barbosu about her mom.

Ana has one brother, who is three years older than the gymnast. With his sister under the limelight of the gymnastics community, Ana’s sibling might also be feeling the pride of her achievement.

Barbosu also notes that in her mind, every competition is the same and just another obstacle on her way to greatness. “ I am trying not to compare competitions,” she was heard saying in 2022. However, that doesn’t mean she doesn’t take things seriously. Last year, in an interview, Ana revealed that she doesn’t like to communicate with anyone on the day of an event, and even stays away from her phone as much as possible. “The only time I put my hand on the phone is to turn off the alarm,” she said.
